Penny, what about the horizon is it that bothers you? I'm not trying to defend anything...I'm just trying to see if there is a technical, or an artistic thing that I could do better. The bluish, gray on the right side of the picture is a big cloud bank that is rolling in over the hills...
Very nice sunset! The only thing I would say, and I think what penny might be referring to, is that the water line is not level. The water is higher on the right. The picture could be rotated clockwise to make it level. I usually use the crop tool as level (not actually cropping but just the line that defines the area) to see how far it needs to be adjusted. For this picture it was about 1 degree. The other thing I would have done is to clone out the dust speck in the upper left above the cloud.
Fabulos hit it on the head. Sorry Jam I should have clarified that. Let me tell you the rest of the shot is amazingly beautiful to me. I just thought the horizon looked off and I was going by the water line. I am always so worried about my horizons that I get too anal about other peoples.
Thanks Fabulos and Penny...as I look at it again I can see the angle you're talking about. I do have a question though...there are times that a horizon seems to trail off...ie a base of a mountain as it extends toward the horizon...a river as it winds it's way to ward the horizon...a lake as it's shoreline wraps around a beach.....are there rules or things that I should take into account for those instances or do I follow a strict linear law that the horizon is alway parallel to the frame? In this photo the water wraps itself around a shoreline in the distance and then falls away on the right....leading out to the ocean. I really do see what you're talking about in this picture...and I do believe that by implementing your suggestions that this would be a better picture....I was just wondering if this was true in all cases?
Amazing colors, love 'em. As for the straightness of the horizon -- personally, I don't think there is any hard rule, only what the artist wants. I, also acknowledge that people like a nice flat horizon, even if nature doesn't cooperate, so I straighten mine (if I think of it!)
Beautiful shot. Reminds me a lot of home... I noticed the horizon, too. I don't think there's a hard and fast rule. If I've got a shot, I'll copy and paste it as a new image. I'll level one horizon and leave the other. Look at them side by side. Choose which looks best. :)
