Those who know me are aware that I love going to historical areas and photographing them.  Every Christmas there is a reenactment of the Stones River Battle, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.  The people who come out are very nice and are great at ignoring the camera!  I shot in color but processed in either B&W or sepia for an aged effect.  If I can figure out the noise setting on my Photoshop someday, I might try adding that.  But take a look and give some advice please.
Soldier 1   This is a photo of the Rebel soldiers after they had drilled for the crowd.

soldier 2   I just loved this guy's hat and the panache is wore it with!

soldier 3  This soldier was getting his gear together on the battlefield.

soldier 4 This is one of my favorite because it came out so sharp.  He was just taking in everything going on around him.

soldier 5 Cannon fire!  That was loud!!

I did work some with these photos in framing them.  To me they look better.  But I'm not sure how everyone else views them.  You can see the framed photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jellybeansview.  Please take a look and let me know what you like better.

Happy New Year!

  • I do like the expression of the soldier in #4 as has been mentioned--wondered how it would be if you had been able to get this pose w/o the wagon/men that are just to the right of him. Your last one is my favore--Cannon Fire is awesome and the sepia tone is timeless for this.

Great Shots of the troops, #5 is it for me.I also love the hat! Stones River Battle was not the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The Baffle of Stones River pitted Maj. Gen. William Rosencrans' 44,000 Union troops against Lt. Gen. Braxton Braggs' nearly 38,000 Confederate forces. Some 3,000 men were killed in this battle. I believe Cold harbor was, at Cold Harbor, the Federal army lost 12,000 killed, wounded, missing while the Confederates suffered almost 4,000 casualties.

  • Interestingly the Park Rangers and all the literature they hand out claim that the Stones River Battle was the bloodiest battle. That's how I got the information. I just enjoy the living history though and am having fun trying to capture it in my own way. :)

  • love the comp. in soldier 4. I'll have to try and remember this, went to Shiloh last year and it was so much fun, this is definitely close enough to make a stop.

I have discovered in my travels that several places claim to be the bloodiest site of the civil war. Anteiteum, Gettysburg, to name a few. I love these pictures you did a wonderful job with them.
