This was the whole reason for buying the 50mm f/1.8 lens. The shallow depth of field is tricky when you really start getting into the low apertures.

Anyways, on to the pictures.

I think a flash is still in order for gym shots. I'll be saving up and doing some research. Any suggestions?

  • I think a flash would do no good at all with these shots... if anything the shots are a bit soft... nice effort with the new lens...

The boys varsity shot is nice! I always like action shots away from the ball.

They are better than anything I have gotten indoors. Terrific captures.

  • Good images,as SG sez a little soft. Those shutter speeds should be fine for a 50mm lens. Were you on auto or manual focus?

I think your composition and exposure is dead on, but the subject must have moved after you focused, which is why they look a bit soft. Maybe try practicing on something that is moving a little bit slower and/or practice focusing and then moving the camera with the subject (With the shutter button still held down to lock the focus). I've gotten pretty good results that way with moving vehicles and people who are walking, but I've never tried sports. I always try to anticipate where the subject is going to move to next and then get a little bit ahead of them and let them move into my viewfinder as I push the shutter button.

I think that you'd get a faster shutter speed, and could use a lower ISO if you used a flash....I believe it will also help it look crisper. When I shot my football shots...the lighting was far worse than a indoor event and I got some pretty sharp, well lit photo's....b.ecause of the flash, and of course an "L" lens

Nice action, indoor sports are so hard to capture, I usually get lots of blurring. So they look great compared to mine. At least with the sports you have plenty of time to practise! I take lots and lots of shots. :o)
