What a Difference a Rock Makes (This Rock is almost as Old as Me and SG)

We've got this rock in our yard that I think is kind of cool. It's full of holes and sometimes it gets stuff growing in it or through it. Currently, violets are trying to surround it. I used this unique rock as the subject for Penny's Challenge.

Snapshot 1 For this shot, the camera was in full Auto. The focal length set to normal, or 50mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100, f6.3 @ 1/125. What’s wrong with it?  Obviously, the idiot that shot it had his own shadow in the picture, the sun is very harsh and he was shooting down on the subject. These are three common snapshot errors.

Snapshot 2 The camera was once again in full Auto. The focal length is set to normal, or 50mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100, f7.1 @ 1/160. How about this? Okay, the idiot moved so his shadow is no longer in the shot, however, there are tree branch shadows in it, the sun is still very harsh and he’s still shooting down on the subject.

The following were shot several hours later. The sun was now lower in the sky, as I lay on my belly and wriggled from place to place for different views of the Rock and Violets. You might say I was eye to eye with the subject. In other words, down at its level. Are they snapshots or photos? I’ll let you be the judge.

Shot 3 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/400
Shot 4 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/400
Shot 5 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/400
Shot 6 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/640
Shot 7 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/640
Shot 8 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/800
Shot 9 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @ 1/250
Shot 10 Aperture priority, 100mm (35mm equivalent), ISO = 100 f2.0 @  1/160

Thanks for looking. I hope you enjoyed. Comments and criticisms delivered with a smile are always more than welcome.

Thank you so much for the great examples and detailed information. The rock and violets - we had rocks like that when I was a kid, it was the bed rock, we called it honey comb rock.

Where's the picture of the idiot sprawled out on the forest floor taking pictures of a rock? And I thought you and SG were older than dirt! Great job, Don, way to get down and dirty!
