Loss of Patrons

Maybe I have a lighter side to myself than I realize.  But my loss pictures aren't really that deep.  I tried my hand at them anyway.

-----

Driving down the road with a friend on a gorgeous May day, she said she had a place she would just love for me to photograph.  We arrived, pulled off the road and got out.  I saw what she wanted a picture of.  A hand-crafted swing made by the loving parent for their kids and eventually their grandkids.

Only on this hot day, the lonely swing had lost it's patrons.  It sat there paitently waiting for their return.  Waiting for school to be out and for the day the wood would again bend slightly under the weight of a child swinging and giggling with delight.

But as I photographed it in all its past glory, it was alone.

  • Disclaimer: I hate to say it, but I have to. I took these with my b&w film, the first to ever be taken not for a class. Thus I couldn't develop them myself and was extrememly disappointed with the one place that develops b&w film without it being sent off for a week and a half (it's a local camera store and the only one in the area that sells darkroom equipment). I got the pictures back with half and half approval rating. The contrast on the above pictures were horrible. So I did what I would have done in the darkroom had I printed these myself. Only I had to use photoshop, I have adjusted the contrast on these in PS.... I feel so dirty. But I justify this deed because it's the same thing I would have done in the darkroom. End of story.

  • I think this is a very nice post for the challenge...My favorite shot is the 1st one, I like that there is part of the fence in the foreground...nice compostion. Nice contrast also :-) (don't feel guilty :-) Great post.

hand-crafted swing and patiently waiting are very nice - good composition on both. Watch your crooked horizons on alone, though.... If you have a store locally that sells darkroom stuff, you should try doing your own developing at home - all you need is a tank and a reel, a changing bag, chemicals and a thermometer, plus some empty jugs to store your chemicals in once you have mixed them. Undiluted D-76 lasts for quite a while...you can develop in your kitchen sink...I used to do it all the time. If you have the space, you can even easily set up a home darkroom in the bathroom (or any other room that you can block the windows and has running water)....used enlargers are going for pennies on the dollar on flea-bay these days...

I really like the 3rd one, "waiting patiently". Great comp. and the reflection adds to the waiting feel. Don't apologize for using PS. We all want to present our best & if it needs a little touch up, go for it....... Kinda like putting on lipstick to go to the store, you never know who'll see....... LOL

  • I'm not sure if it was crooked though fuzzy. I looked at it and debated for a long time. It was very hilly in the area (on a mountain, the pond was in a dip). I think it was just like that. But I did notice it. And I referred back to some of the others and they were tilted a little. But it's possible. I'm bad about it sometimes. Yeah, I have all the equipment for developing the film (no enlargers yet for printing. Maybe soon), but it requires a trip to Murfreesboro and to MTSU where all my stuff is in a locker. I didn't have time, or money, to make the trip just for this roll of film. If I were still in Murf and not AL I'd have done it in a heart beat... along with some other negatives I've been wanting to make prints of. But the job is in 'bama and I need to make some money. Or no new DSLR or anything at all for Leslie.

Patiently waiting, has better tonal depth and contrast...the swing kinda reminds me of gallows...

  • Love "hand-crafted swing" and "patiently waiting"! Beautiful timeless feel in all of these. You did great on contrasts, too. Definitely worth waiting for, faerie.
