SurferGuy Shows you the Water on the Two Ends, Pyro Shows you the Water in the Middle

Here in Ozaukee County we have a relatively new park called Lion's Den Park that overlooks the shores of Lake Michigan. I drove there and took five pictures at shortly after noon today. The lake was breathtaking with its many shades of blues, greens and azures, and the clouds only added to the beauty.

I present two color shots and three black and white. All were shot using aperture priority with a focal length of 14mm (28mm equivalent) from a tripod. Although I thought the camera was level, I discovered after uploading that they were tipped about 1.5 degrees causing me to have to straighten and crop. (Darn 3 martini lunches.)

Muted Color F8 @ 1/160 second
Vivid Color F8 @ 1/200 second

The Black and Whites were shot with the contrast set at +1.
The internal Red filter provides the darkest sky tones and brightest clouds.
The internal Yellow filter is useful for clear contrast between blue sky with clouds.

B&W with No Filter F8 @ 1/160 second
B&W with Internal Yellow Filter F8 @ 1/160 second
B&W with Internal Red Filter F8 @ 1/160 second

Suggestions, comments and criticisms served with a smile are always welcome.

The color shots are so beautiful, soft yet colorful, reminds me of a watercolor. And thanks for the lesson on filters in the B/W shots. I keep going back to look at "Vivid".... very nice indeed.

'Vivid' is my favorite, nicely composed, great colors.

I like, among the b/w of course, the last shot with the internal red filter -- it seems to bring out the cloud definition better and also the various shades in the vegetation. It's interesting to see that the internal filters work.

I agree with wilk about the last and the cloud definition. Great composition, but I think the shots fall a bit flat (it may be my computer, my laptop always washes out the pictures a little). Just my thought on them :-D (is that smile served with the criticism big enough?)

I love the colors in vivid. The composition is good. I love the how the clouds go on forever. Internal red filter is my pick of the b&w. I agree with wilk on it bringing out more details. :o)

EMF...You have a lovely smile! I'm not sure what you mean by "shots fall a bit flat". I just know if I'd gotten too close to the edge of the bluff that I was standing on, I'd have been flat when I hit the beach below.

    - Mmmmmm... Multiplicative

Great shots PyGuy--fun to see the differences in the filters. And why didn't you call me for cocktail hour?

The last shot of both groups are my favorites, Don! The last time we were at the lake it was a lot rougher water.

I love the vibrancy of the lake in the color shots, but the B&W are more dramatic, the red filter gives the most detail & contrast (IMO).

I like the composition, but even the "vivid" one is very muted, probably because it was so cloudy. If you adjust the "levels" in Photoshop, or something similar (especially if you do the Red, Green, Blue channels individually) you will see an amazing difference in the shot. Then convert to B&W (preferably with Channel Mixer) and the shot will have tons of contrast. Takes about a minute, and you'll love the results. I didn't mean for my first comment in months and months to be a negative one! So hopefully you won't see it that way!

Great tutorial... very good explanation and examples. Thanks for taking the time! Love the contrast with the red filter.... awesome!

I guess what I mean by flat, is what saxguy said: The colors are muted. Sorry the response was took so long.
