This last Saturday was my Gramma's Birthday/Memorial Celebration. I haven't been to many funerals where the first song was "Happy Birthday." It was fun and appropriate.

I took this photo of my nephew at the graveside service. Braeden B&W I thought I would see how it looked in b&w. I increased the contrast and the result is so completely different than the original color version. It's amazing how B&W can change the impact of a photo.

  • Geez. The B&W is downright eerie. Nice contrast of the two.

talk about freckles!!! The b/w could be a tad lighter, more contrast, but just a but!

  • Wow, that sure got my attention. What a load of freckles. My next oldest brother had freckles like that as a kid. I was always envious.

  • Shock was definitely the first thing to come across my face. The mood is so drastically different in the b&w than in color. Great comparison shots.

In this case I would pick the color. B&W takes away from the whole look of your nephew. Kind of eerie like Smalls said.

To catch the true essence of the shot I would go with the color. You are right, what a difference in the two. The B&W shot is by no means terrible, but it detracted from the original features.

  • I definitely agree that the color version is better. My nephew was making a funny face, which shows up in the color version. The B&W just looks ... odd. I normally would not increase the contrast as much as I did in the B&W version, but I wanted to minimize the background. The color version shows more of his personality, but the challenge was black and white, so I had to try.
