Storm Chasing

After supper tonight I took off for the west heading right into the teeth of an oncoming thunderstorm. Once the storm passed the light was beautiful and a gorgeous rainbow appeared. I could see it from end to end. I didn't bother converting the rainbow shots into black and white but I did with the others. I'm having trouble deciding which versions I like better. Generally speaking, I prefer the light in the color shots and the clouds in the black and white shots. Let me know what you think.

Storm Chasing

P.S. I'm noticing some strange jpeg artifacts on some of these shots. Anybody else notice that too?

I usually like clouds in B&W but this set I have to go with color. They loose something in B&W

I notice that you captured a double rainbow in "Rainbow 1", Tom. Very faint, but there indeed and nice. Like Penny, I prefer these shots in color. I'm not sure what you mean by jpeg artifacts, but I don't see it perhaps due to the small images in the slide show.

  • I actually noticed the jpeg "jaggies" on the last two images only. They appear to me in the upper left corner.

The double rainbow in two is a great capture but image 1 is my favorite love the comp of that one. An awesome shot. I too prefer the color sunsets but that's a sky that converts well to b&w and these converted great. The color pref is a subjective choice, at least with me, not an aesthetic or technical one. I didn't notice any artifacts but my monitor is an old crt, the images are small, and the eyes are weak.

  • Nice shots Tom. I don't see them either. Are they in the original images and the larger images or just in the slide show?

  • The jpeg jaggies are not on the local version of the files I uploaded. I know that some jpeg compression is done on slide shows. I'll check the versions in my library here to see if they have the jaggies. I don't notice them on the library version, so I think it's the slideshow jpeg compression that must be causing it. Below is a link to the library version if you want to compare. Stormy Sunset 2

  • Very beautiful... there is something about the b&w but I think I have to agree with penny and say the color really makes the shots. Great storm chasing!

  • Last time out, the storm out ran me while waiting for lightning. Live radar to track them on the cell phone would of came in handy. But I forgot I had the option.

  • If ever there were to be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I think it was in these shots! Very nice!
