Black and white in honor of Wilk

I normally shoot color, but given that this is Wilk's challenge and he loves black and white, I took a spin with black and white conversion on this post. Tonight, Anna and I went down out to get some late day shots. Unfortunately, the sun went down behind clouds, so the light was not great. However I did get a few images when the sun was peaking out.

My eye was drawn to this grass that looked luminescent, almost like bunches of little fairies. I am interested in knowing whether you prefer the color or black and white version, if any. I know that most of the blades of grass are not in focus. I wasn't worried about that because what I wanted to capture was the glowing rim around the tops. The fly on the one blade of grass was a bonus. I didn't see that until I got home.

This is my entry in the seeing wide challenge. I didn't bother posting the color version of this one because I think the black and white is far better.

I prefer the grass in color. What a lovely capture! You're right, it does look like the grass is glowing. The dragonfly provides an interesting contrast, but I wish he'd picked a little better location (closer to the focal point). Oh, well, it's still a great shot. I think the black and white grass might benefit from bumping up the contrast a bit.

I would like the grass in B&W better if it had more contrast. I really like the last one it is beautiful and has way more contrast.

Grass in color for me; not enough contrast in the b/w version. The comp bothers me in the last shot; I think I would've taken it from the one big tree that's now in the middle and aimed the lens more towards the left. The stuff at the top of the right hand side and the little trees need to go, IMHO. Great contrast, though!

I really like the glow in the colored grass, but the lat shot I think is very dramatic.

Grass in color was great! The DOF was more apparent. Agree with Kay either a crop or shooting a little to the left to lead your eyes through the clouds on the last one. Would have helped the comp. I wasn't there though..just my two cents....

At the risk of forming an old guys clique, I prefer the b&w also though the dragonfly is easier to pick out in the color version.

  • I too agree, grass in color works better for this shot - but still nice.

Great shots! I like both, color and b&w. For different reasons. I almost always prefer color, but I like both with this shot. Love the way the sun is on the plants and the way the color brings it out, plus you can see the dragonfly better. In the b&w the way the sun hits it is still a great effect. :o)

  • Color in glowing grass and Sunset in b&w is big sky drama with tree silhouettes.
