Something to welcome in 2008, indeed. I am old, this is not at all my style preference, but that being said, the creativity and composition of this photo is excellent and it's emotional and thought provoking. Show us more.
Creative...I think not, if any young kids or young adult view this photo...what do think goes into thier minds...DRUG USE. not cool or creative. All this picture is saying is how colorful and creative drugs are......
Try to ignore the typical "Anonymous" comment. Yes, young people's minds are impressionable. To everything, not just the things you consider bad, or wrong, or dangerous. The things you consider good are being pumped into their systems harder and faster than ever before, and who's to say that's right? Once again, this is a photography site, not a place where kids are coming to look for the latest trends. This picture may be one of the best pictures posted in the last few months, and all you are concerned with is how it will affect an impressionable mind? It's bullshit. Society is constantly looking for things to blame for why kids are the way they are, but they refuse to look at the root causes. Try being a parent. A real parent. One who raises their kids to KNOW right from wrong, not relying on the media to tell their kids what's right and what's wrong. JFC!
I for one love the shot for the creative and the photography aspect. Guess what I showed my 15 year old son too! Did he say "Oh I am going to do drugs?" No. He thought it was a good and original shot. Actually his first comment was "That is cool looking. Someone would be nuts to use a needle that big for anything!" I have to agree with Code about all the bleeding hearts in the world. Hey lets go back to raising our kids and telling them what is right and what is wrong. Also be able to discpline them ourselves. I don't shelter my kids from stuff. I do protect them. There is a difference. My sons both know drugs are bad. But the object here isn't the topic it is the photo in general. Like SG said he doesn't like it but it is a good shot. If there are kids on the net they need to be supervised. What happens if we get nude photos on here like we used to have a lot of? Then what? My thought is the shot is way better then a lot of stuff on here including every single shot I have posted myself. This is a great photograph! A lot of thought was put into the set up of this shot. A good photo stirs emotion and this one definately has.
One other thing is if you can't give constructive criticism and you don't like it. MOVE ON. The comments about the photographic quality and the fact that it is not liked are fine.
I agree with code and penny on everything (and glad someone got on a soap box). I don't mind the subject matter (after looking at cast molds made from frozen blood and other various disturbing 'body' art in my art history class, nothing can get to me). I think it is provocative, but done well. Beautiful colors, composition and creativity. (and I can name many photographers whose photos are beautiful and studied in art and photo history but their subject matter is questioned and criticized).
Some people see images for what is in them, and don't look much deeper than that if the images strikes the unknown. The clarity of the photo is amazing and since I don't work in film much I have a tendency to see past what is on the surface. For instance: the "blood" in the needle is obviously not a narcotic, nor if this was to glorify the narcotic world it definitely isn't doing that if some are "grossing" out. The fact that the wounds are self-inflicting tells me as well that this is a choice...and not something that is forced. So, after looking at the image I see many stories, one of which derives from the heavy bracelets that "look" like they may come off, but only with a struggle and the ribbon identifying a female personae and beauty. The moral of the story: Feminine beauty can come with a bloody price that we all serve and it is our choice to weather or not we do.
Penny's made a point: if you don't like it, move on. I think about blowing my brains out with all the flower shots we get here. I remedy that by not looking at them. And shoot me in the brain if one more person says "There are children on this site...". As Code said, if there are children on this site, then be a parent and monitor what they see. If a parent turns a kid loose online to look at anything they want, then there's a much bigger problem than this photo. I'm an adult. I want to see whatever I choose. And screw me, if you're gonna post, get a friggin' screen name. The one thing I love about Boy's shots (aside from the phenomenal craftsmanship) is that they're a hair twisted, thoughtful and interesting. Nope, they aren't the family at the beach, the cat on the chair or the flower in the pot. Thank God.
i worked psych for years and had young adult clients who were drug users , even with many years of therapy they would continued to try to be users & cutters... I would not want them to see this image, it would give them a wrong message... AU was not saying the photo was not good, just the image and message he felt while looking at it... i too feel it is a disturbing photo... but... it is a well focused pic... IMOH ....
Addiction makes an addict, not looking at a picture of someone shooting up. Alcoholics and drug addicts will always be addicts, no matter how much detox and therapy they go through, and no matter how long they manage to stay clean and sober. If you take an addict and show them pictures of people getting high, it's not the pictures that are going to make them want to get high, it's their addiction. It all goes back to being responsible. Whether it be responsibility for yourself, or for your children, or for your care of a recovering addict.
Another thing I was thinking about. If there are unsupervised kids on the internet I doubt that Photographica is at the top of thier lists to surf. They can get way more racey stuff way more easily on other sites. Here they have a lot of as Smalls says flower and puppies to look through to find anything bad.
I didn't realize that this was my great great aunt's stomping ground. Never really noticed the parental guidance disclaimer. The photo in question is easily the best photograph posted since I joined a few short months ago. Funny, I never found the urge to jab myself with anything after seeing it. My initial thought was "Good God, why don't I have an imagination like that?!" It takes some nerve to dismiss this as just another bit of offensive psudo-porn. (I'll know offensive when I see it). I'm pretty sure that Boy didn't invent iv drug users, maybe this is just a small report on society as he sees it. A sound bite you might call it. If there is some type of moral police department lurking here that I was never aware of, it's probably time to go.
and you're free to say that cratchet. No one has to like it just because it's posted here. You don't have to like the subject matter just as smalls hates fluffy puppies or flowers. It's the fact that someone wanted to say that there are impressionable minds that it's going to hurt. and lunartide... I thought the same thing "Good God, why don't I have an imagination like that?!". (and on a side note because of the statement I'll know offensive when I see it it made me think, porn and art have very similar views. You can't describe it, but you'll know it when you see it.)
This shot has a right to be posted, just like all of you good or bad shots do. But it should have come with a warning at least. Awhile back someone posted shots of road kill...they more than likely did it just to get a reaction from all here. But is that not what photography is about in a way? To get a reaction. I know Boys work and he is very talented, he always pushes the edge. It's up to the individual to accept what he or anyone has to say thru their shots. Pictures do mean something and some shots can hurt or do harm, just as well.... they can bring a smile to ones heart.... this does not bring a smile to my heart, and the subject matter ...for me..... over shadows by far the photography quality...I don't like it.
Somethings never change ...like my poor typing stills and bad grammar. I meant to type in the first sentance......just like all of *your* good or bad....
as a recovering addict i view the picture more as art therapy than an invite to take drugs, some of the narrow minded assumptions that have been left as comments however do make me want to shot up. A fantastic shoot, theraputic and if anything its discouraging towards drug use blue arm showing the decay you will encounter if you choose this path. Wether you find it offensive or not you cannot deny how good the photo is! those who think it is a bad photo well i'd say your just jealous! I'm intrigued to know how the idea came about boy? is it yours or the models? what inspired it?
I agree with above, the blue signifies death to me. Very creative and thoughtprovoking. And no, we're not that impressionable, but I do think maybe some shots should come with a warning, to keep those who are sensitive happy.
how many time have others not liked the content of something and we have always agreed that a warning would be nice....that's why it was introduced as a way to give people the choice........oh please I don't recall anyone saying they thought the shot was poor in a photographic sense. All that have said they didn't like the content, added that it was a very well taken shot.
Good comment Charlie. That is a comment coming from a teenager! Chef I guess I do not understand your last comment. The part about the warning....do you mean that is a bad idea? Or are you saying it doesn't work? It isn't a bad idea. But if you are saying it doesn't work. I don't agree. It does work. We have so many new people that have not been around when the dicussion was brought up. I think I remember the last warning discussion being about nudity. This post IMHO does not need a warning. Also once again...Chef why don't you sign in?
I personaly don't think its very good, to vote for it only because it stirs emotion, to me is as bad as not voting for it because of subject matter. I just don't like it.
Penny, if you read my first comment you would have read that I thought it *should* have come with a warning. So if I thought that, it must mean I also think the warning can work for those who choose to heed it. My seconed comment was to joust with code...he laughed at the use of the warning...saying *"So if there was a warning on this post, it would have been less offensive. Please..."* No...duh! The warning doesn't change the content...of course....but it is a nice thing to do. Or are we just not nice anymore?
Here's my favorite post: "i try to look at the photograph, but the it IS sick and takes away any art." This from a guy named Jim Jones who doesn't see the irony in using Kool Aid as his avatar while wagging his finger at the content of Boy's photo. Talk about sick. Making light of mass suicide is sick; it's not kitch or tired shorthand for impressionable lemmings. If you don't like the photo, don't vote for it. If you have a problem with the technique, offer help. If you don't like the photographer's vision, then don't vote for it. It's best not question someone's taste without first wiping the sick blood red kool aid moustache off your mug. Ohh yeahhh!
I personaly don't think its very good, to vote for it only because it stirs emotion, to me is as bad as not voting for it because of subject matter. You're right. In the future, I'll limit my votes to pictures that are visually pleasing, and mentally dull. Again, you are right: good photography doesn't and shouldn't stimulate the mind.
Well in my opinion, this is an excellent photograph of a meticulously thought out and executed idea. Which is precisely why I voted for it. Not because I knew it would stir the pot.
This photo doesn't work. Obviously, from the comments, it's intended to drive me and my kids to iv drug use and ,damn it, I've been looking at this for some time and not once have I had to the urge to shoot up. I love it, boy! Very well done! Right On, Code! p.s. Smalls, after reading your comment I did have the urge to go shoot some flowers and post them but damn it, it's winter.
Codepoint, sorry showed up anonymous earlier ,on company computer,Your last comment is the point," bravo" that is what I was trying to say just not well.Subject matter is not the issue good or bad, But is it well done!
