I felt that I needed to go on a different kind of photo shoot, so I went to the Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis taking nothing but my Nikon D200 with the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 prime lens. There was a public salsa dancing lesson going on when Kirstin, Anna and I arrived. I keyed in on these two young women who were really getting into it. Later I snuck some images of Kirstin while she wasn't looking. I really love that 85mm lens. It is so nice and light and allows you to get right in on folks without getting in their face.

  • I love the portrait of Kirstin. And great shots of the women dancing--love the DOF on them all.

  • Nice job Tom. You chose a great diversion. It's kind of funny. In this world of zooms for all ranges people tend to forget about the primes. I guess they don't want to spend the money for a single focal length. I have both a 50mm F1.8 and a 100mm F2.8 macro and I love both of those lenses. They are so sharp and sweet to work with .

You did a wonderful job on these, Tom. Like smalls said, great dof in the dancing shots. I have the same lenses Mike has for my Canon; I love 'em both, too, but it's hard for me to use them sometimes. I get *so* used to zooming.........I catch myself trying to zoom when I've got one of the primes on!

  • Looks like you gave that new lens a wonderful workout! The dancing shots are fantastic, and the two of Kirsten are super! I am like KayN... I put on that 50 of mine and try to zoom it... but the primes are sometimes forgotten in the bag... thanks for the reminder!

Nice job on these, especially the last one of Kirsten. Prime lenses rule. I'd rather move my feet than a zoom ring almost any day.

sometimes I put my old 50mm on my defunct old k1000 and just look around...in my opinion, the worlds most perfect lens. These are great and right up my alley and the first one is my favorite.

  • Yes...a flash back to the classics of quality does stimulate artistry within a fixed focal length. Mine is the 105mm,1:2.8. Great DOF and your Kirsten with color and background caught my eye.

  • Wow... you did some amazing shooting on a moving target! Crisp Focus in a dimly lit environment too. Beautiful subjects, and those you'll cherish for the rest of your life. Thanks for sharing.

Great shooting. I am with Kay on the use of the prime lens. I find myself trying to zoom them too. I have the nifty fifty and I am not completely sold on it. But not sure I have given it a chance really. I need to use it more and get used to it. I love the last one and the DOF on the shots is great.
