A Day in the El Pasos - Introduction

I spent all day Saturday on a tour (the tour guide is a coworker) wandering the El Pasos, in California. I've been to most of the places we visited before, but it had been awhile. We visited the Dutch Cleanser Mines, Bonanza, Bickel Camp, Burro Schmidt's Tunnel, Lee Canyon, and Garlock Peak (I hadn't been here before, so that was new and exciting).

I took 261 photos that day and I'm still sorting through them and will share them a few at a time over the next few days. But, I wanted to get SOMETHING out here to you guys, so here are two.

These bottles were sitting at Bickel Camp and I thought that they were just plain pretty. As you will see in following posts, the people inhabiting this mine site over the past few decades ate a lot of beans and drank a lot of wine! Now that's good livin'!

The second one for me, too. Must have been inhabited recently, those are screw tops. Great light, makes the glass gleam.

Bickel Camp is still inhabited, kal. There's a caretaker there who oversees the place and makes sure that the vandals and thieves are kept at bay. Not too far from Bickel Camp is Burro Schmidt's Tunnel. Once the owner died, the BLM kicked the caretaker off of the land and, since nobody was there to protect it, the place has been annihilated. (I have pics coming of that.) A lot of history has been either stolen or destroyed completely.

I can't decide I like both for different reasons. But IMHO the caps are a little over exposed.

  • I also like both. Great colour and lighting! Was this where you found the old vehicle last time you visited? Look forward to seeing more.

Boy! Yes it is! Bickel Camp. You know, that truck is gone! I should have asked about what happened to it. But, wait until you see the rest of the stuff! LOL Walt Bickel was a pack rat and collected all kinds of mechanical periphanalia and rue-goldberged it to make things work around the mine. Interesting stuff.
