Thanks to everyone for their kind welcomes and comments on my inaugural post here several days ago.  From looking around it seems that there are many talented photographers here in this supportive community.

I thought I would follow up with some other shots taken in that rural area the same day Barn in Red and Black Grain Silos Rural Ruins

The sole exception is this one Wetlands in Winter (Foggy Morning) taken the following morning at a wetlands preserve in a heavy fog.

  • Those are all beautiful pictures - love both barns, and the silo's look like a transparent optical illusion - was this a double exposure, or a PS play? Foggy morning is beautifully done.

  • You didn't ask but I'll offer. Good shots but, to me, they suffer from being too carefully centered. Rule of thirds would help a lot here. And they're either soft or too sharpened--I'm not sure what that is. But have fantastic potential. I love grain silos--all B&W would have avoided that noise of the color and improved it, I think. And wetlands is marvelous. Would be even better using the rule of thirds. Doesn't sound like I liked the shots but I did!

Love the first shot, I thought at first you had done color spotting to it, terrific set!

  • Constructive criticism is always welcome Smalltown, thanks. You are right about the sharpening. I think I accidentally had my cameras sharpening function set to high when these were taken. As for the silos, no photoshop manipulation was used. The barn really was behind the silos, it was just a matter of choosing the right angle.

  • What do they store there? Looks like anything would blow away or get eaten by critters. Really a cool catch.

I have to agree with smalls on the sharpening and rule of thirds. You have good subject matter and if it's not too far to travel, shoot them again. I sometimes do that and find better results.

Love the silos -- they look ready to launch. I think Smally has some good ideas and I hope you get a chance to reshoot these. The whole scene has wonderful potential and you've whetted my interest.

What they said. Great subjects. Pardon the city boy, but are the grain silos made of wire mesh?

  • Have to disagree with Smalls, at least on the red barn. I don't see it as too "centered" - my eye goes first to the front peak, (at the NE-third intersection), and next to the red side, which is centered over the diagonal thirds-intersection. It is a really pleasing balance to my eye.

Smalls is gonna have the big head from this post........lol.......great explanation on the "fix" for these, girlie! cratchet, I see what you are saying, too, and I think you have a point, but I still think the shot would benefit from more of the field on the right side or something to get the barn out of the center of the shot. Sometimes centered works; here, for me, it doesn't.
