Challenge Entry

Rock Steady

Here's one for the go long challenge.

This is a portion of Hooker Falls in DuPont State Forest in North Carolina.  DuPoint State Forest is a beautiful place in the mountains near Asheville.  The land was donated to the state by DuPont Chemical Co after they quit making x-ray film there.  I'm told they picked the site for the clean air and water.

I used two ND filters and f/32 to get this four second exposure on a sunny day in February.

Hooker Falls, DuPont State Forest, NC

What do you think?  I'm not sure I like the composition.  Cropped and converted to B&W - there was very little color to start with.

Thank you for your exposure information & I like the B&W aspect of this shot ... This is a great shot with a little tweeking ... I find the rock in the foreground a little distracting along with the softer than what might be expected upper right hand corner ... maybe a upper and lower crop might work here

B&W is a good choice. I think there should be a little more in focus to really convey the slow shutter speed you used for the water. Also the top right corner is too bright.

Taking these on a sunny day is very difficult, the nd filters were a great choice. The only thing i would try is maybe a little different crop. Although the water from above is powerful it also tends to direct your eyes up and makes you wonder what you're missing. Crop the top and put the rock more in the rule of thirds. Excellent image!

I like the advice from everyone, however, this is still well done.

I would like to see what appears to be the upper falls, but that is second guessing the photographer. I love the effect the long exposure gives, but maybe 2.5 or so might have taken some of the brighness out. I probably would not have made a shot half as nice, so who am I to give advise? Keep them coming.

Nice shot. Instead of 2 nd filters, you might want to try a nd and a polarizer, or just a polarizer. A polarizer cuts off 1 1/2 stops. I rarely stack filters as it just adds more glass to cut image quality. I haven't been to this park, thanks for the intro. It would be easier if you could still get asa 25 film like you could several years ago......grrrrr

A good entry for the challenge. Comp could be improved; such as cropping to just the right of the lower rock.

Great shot for the theme.... I like the softness of the water with the long exposure.... you did good! Like said above, a little Post Processing and you'll take a good shot to a great shot...

nice shot. I agree about it needing something. it's hard to tell what. i think the two white edges leave the viewer a bit out at sea. best, mark

Cropping the top 1/3 of the photo I think would have been ideal.
