There is a large group of ducks, mostly mallard that spend the winter on the lake and river that feeds it.
They're used to people and being fed by humans through the winter.
If you have cracked corn it's usually easy to get some close shots with the camera.

Lady Mallard

Young Male Mallard

Wood Duck 1

Wood Duck 2

They were more skittish than usual so I didn't get the detail shots I was looking for with the 105.

Have a good week and thanks for looking.
Feel free to say what you want.

  • we don't have wood ducks in CA, amazing birds and shots. what a treat. the wood duck (i believe) is actually one of the only shore birds that doesn't live at the shore. anyway, great shots. best, m.

Wood ducks are suposed to live in trees. The two at the shoot are always with the mallards, I think they think they're mallards too. Carol, I usually use the 105 for macro, I wanted to get down to their level and do details of the feathers, eyes, etc. They usually surround us, pecking at our feet and legs if we don't feed them fast enough so I thought I had a good chance of carrying out my plan. They wouldn't come near us this trip!
