NEWPORT TO ENSENADA YACHT RACE

By colbb written 4/26/08 2:18 PM, published 5/1/08 2:57 PM

Friday, April 25th, yachts of many sizes and designs gathered at the starting area for the largest International Yacht Race in the world.  Over 400 vessels entered the 2008 race.

My images start about 1 hour before start time and end a few minutes before the horn sends off the first group of boats.

If interested, the entire album can be seen at:

Several yachts in the channel head for the assembly area.

two more.

Another with tall mast.

Dennis Connor's famous Stars & Stripes.

I chose not to level the horizon in this one so people could remain in the frame.  The assembly area begins to fill.

A number of craft leaving the Yacht Clubs in Newport Beach.

College student crew of the Maritime Academy.

Odd craft proudly carries the U.S. Flag.

These boats pass spectators on the beach at "The Wedge."

Last chance to relax, these crews enjoy quick visit.

Looks like a strategy briefing.

Assembly area continues to grow.

The sharp eyed and curious minds among you may have spotted the brown color over the far horizon.  Yep, it's smog,  but it was still a great day in Corona Del Mar and Newport Beach.

These are some beautiful shots Colonel!! ... One thing bothers me though ... A number of your shots cut off the bow of the boat (two more, Maritime Academy, visit, & strategy briefing) ... That would be ok except the description was focusing on what was going on in the stern of the boat ... For my part I would have liked to have seen a closer view of where the action was (the stern), or the whole boat ... I hope I'm not being to picky ... But a nice job overall worthy of my vote!!

Good points, VS. In the complete album there are shots of all the boats and as I recall, there is at least one shot of the whole boat in each case. But not close up with the big lens. I did focus on the crew in most of the telephoto shots, just a personal choice. If I could shoot it again, I would take more telephoto of the whole boat. Live and learn, I guess. Thanks for your comments. BB
