Santa Fe Workshop--Photographing People

By tomnorth written 4/3/08 8:05 PM, published 4/5/08 8:58 AM

In March I attended a workshop on photographing people at the Santa Fe Workshop. Here are four of my favorite images from that class. We had to approach strangers at various venues and ask them if we could take their picture. It was rather intimidating at first, but eventually I got pretty good at it. The lick shot was completely spontaneous. I'm just happy I captured it.

Wonderful! Great timing! Love the emotions in all of the shots. Lick is my fav, too! But I like the way you blurred the front people and focused on the face in the background shot. He has a great face to photograph. :o)

Way to get out of your comfort zone, the lick is sick! Must have been a fun workshop.

All great people shots. Stepping out of your comfort zone really paid off. I really like the rooftop shot, the lighting and colors are beautiful.

Enjoyed your take on these, all good--in Background really like the face of the old man--would be very interesting to hear about his life.

Great! I love that lick...the decisive moment! To the front...

  • lifeonfilm
Good job! "Background" is the strongest shot for me. Last shot is a good situational portrait.

  • Corwyn
I second what Lifeonfilm says.. Background works wonderfully, I need to take this class, I prefer human subjects, but as seen on my NYC pics, I'm so nervous about approaching!

    - Innit it?

  • digitalphotodude

Congratulations. I bet most of us struggle with timidity in approaching others, but you did a great job.
