Seven years ago , a friend gave me a potted hunk of leaf and told me that this would someday become a plant that had BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS.
You would NOT believe it by the look of the leaf or by the large stalk it sprouted with large ugly leaves hanging from it. Or the subsiquent stalks topped with large ugly leaves!
Did I mention that it would take SEVEN Years for said UGLY plant to BLOOM????
Well last year it bloomed, not once but twice which it is not known to do.This year the blooms came a month earlier. The first flower on July first and the second bud the next night. They start opening around 7pm, are fully open by 10pm and start to die around 4am.They are suposed to be very fragrent, I can't smell it and Christy (who gave me the plant) couldn't smell a thing. Wildman says it smells wonderful and can't believe I can't smell it!
Enoungh said... here are the pictures.
two buds
 front
side
back  closing up
bloom 2 .
I got smart a held up a dark cloth to keep out the distractions in the kitchen on the second bloom.
Have a great weekend everyone and thanks for looking!

This flower belongs in an Adams Family movie. Grows very fast... blooms and dies in a short time. Fills the air with a scent that is better than beer! Good shootin Birdie!

I've never seen this, or heard of it.....it is gorgeous! You did a fantastic job of documenting it's progress from bud to bloom! Does it bloom any other color besides white?

Thanks for all the comments! Kay, the flowers are white. I think because it blooms at night, it probably is more visible to what ever pollenates it. White flowers tend to glow in the dark somewhat.

Thanks for all the comments! Kay, it only blooms white to my knowledge. Probably to help what ever pollenates it to find it, as well as the scent. White flowers tender to glow in the dark somewhat.

Thanks for sharing these pics. It reminds me of my mom. She passed in 1970 after being in and out of the hospital for years. When her plant would bloom, we'd cut a blossom and put it in a paper bag in the fridge and take it to her to see the following day. I've just started another one this year.
