So I have problems with the basics of focal point / composition.  They are different and I'm never sure if the photos have either or both.  Here's an example.  The focal point should be the robin or is it the bright shaft of sunlight?  The composition should flow up the diagonal line to the bird and stop at the vertical post.  Does it?   HELP!!

Fledgling

Umm...I'm sorry I can't be of much help, but for what it's worth I think this is a wonderful photo. The only advice I might be inclined to give is perhaps a slight bump in the contrast, but I love it : )

Composition is allways personal, it's what you want.

On this shot, the robin is centered, but the weight of the shot (another arbitary term) is to the right.  With the soft focus on the left, this shot works well.

My consern and its just my opinion...  the shot is jus a bit out of balance...  I would move the chick to the right and down...  leave the same space between the right edge and bottom edge from the birds side and feet

    - Yep.... I can do that....

I don't know about the centering of the shot, but I like the way you captured the fear of leaving the nest. To me, that's what makes this a great shot.

Focal point is dead on, I like SG's suggestion, but at the same time, I like it how it is.  I think you did a great job.  There's always millions of compositions, but you definitely got the focal point on this one.

When I first viewed it, I also thought it was a little heavy on the right and would benefit from shifting the bird to the right, as SG suggested.  But, then again, for me it works the way it is.

I like it a lot. The colors of the feathers go well with the wood and with the background. The focus is good, the light is right and the spots of sunlight on the wood help lead the eye to your subject. The focal point IMO is the bird's left eye and I might be tempted to crop a little off the bottom and the right in order to bring that more toward the center.
