Don't play what's there, play what's not there.

This is a the brilliance that is Annie Leibovtiz and Miles Davis. This shot was taken on the 4th of July, I had been listening to alot of Davis and remembered that Annie Leibovitz had taken an amazing portrait of him. I ran and got my mom's copy of her book Photographs 1970-1990 and flipped to the page. It took about an hour to set it all up and get the right settings of my camera down. I remember getting really frustrated with this because I had to set up my tripod to be right over me but not in the shot as well. Annie Leibovitz greatly influenced my love of photography and portraiture. By far one of my favorite photographers. : ) As for Miles Davis...he's the reason I love music especially the Blues.

I am a blues fan too. The shot is interesting, but it has the feel of looking into the lid of an open casket and the hair covering the face leaves me with that somethings missing feeling.
- It must be a full moon.

I've never been a big fan of Miles Davis, but I do love blues--Etta James, BB King, Eric Clapton, and bunches of others. And you could do a lot worse than trying to replicate an Annie Leibovitz shot. That lady has done some incredible portraits. I'm sure you learned a lot in doing this.

Thanks guys.
Dub-Thanks...I think? I dunno. It was a very difficult shot to recreated because I didn't have a remote or anything for my camera and just hope that the focus was right and that the timer would work.
PTL-My hair wasn't covering my face, my arms were. In Leibovitz shot you can clearly see his eye peeking through his arms but I had no way of making sure my camera could catch that clear of a detail without a remote. I just had to try and figure out where it should be focused and set the timer and then go back and check...this went on for about an hour before I got frustrated with it and had to walk away from it.

I understand. I am not familiar with the original shot.

Fish-It's all good. I'd like to recreate the shot again but using a model instead of myself...or get someone else to take it for me and be my "human" tripod.

sometimes the photo isn't the end result.
sometimes, it's the knowledge you learned taking the shot...making the next one easier.
...and sometimes it's the patience and the forgiveness you give yourself when you try something new and you don't get it just right the first time.

And, Jamie, you should listen to these folks -- not just because they have sharp knives and pointy heads, although that is certainly a consideration -- but because they know well of what they speak. ;-)

Thanks everyone. I really do appreciate all the feedback. I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit sad when it seemed to flop. But practice makes perfect and I'll just have to try again. I'd like to try this again at some point, probably again when I'm in NM and have a white sheet to use and a tripod....waaaait, I'd need my trumpet with me. Shoot. Maybe I'll use my mom's Violin.
