The Bastakia Quarter
Bastakia Quarter in Bur Dubai is one of the city’s most picturesque heritage sites. It was built in the late 19th century by Persian merchants attracted to the city by its relaxed trade tariffs and takes it name from the town of Bastak in southern Iran.
The area has been declared a conservation area and its narrow alleys pedestrianised. Many of the restored buildings here feature wind towers, an early but effective form of air-conditioning. Some are private homes, but many are open to the public.

Very nice shots of the place.
Tell me, where are all the people? It seems odd to have all the space and not have someone around.

I was wondering that too Mr. Q. Nice set. The Bastikya looks more like a prison than a house.

I was thinking the same thing about the people, and also the lack of any variety of colors. Nice set, thanks for sharing with us. :o)

Yep, agreed - did you make everyone move out of the frame in order to shoot these? Other than the mosque shot, I didn't notice a soul. I like the last shot of the lit minaret. Some of the others are a little short on color, although this is something you have little control over, I realize. Old, sun-baked desert architecture is not all that colorful. Were you in Dubai for the air show?

Great set.... nice glimpse of your world. The lit minaret is really pretty. I also liked the old versus new with the high rises peeping over the background of the first coin museum shot.

Thanks for your input everyone. No, I didn't get everybody out of the shot!! LOL!! When I walked around it was on a Friday in the early afternoon. I since found out that Fridays and Saturdays are the weekend in Dubai! Also, from 1pm to 4-4.30pm, the whole place almost closes down. Shops close and people disappear. Where to, I don't know. Maybe to pray? Maybe it's a carry over tradition from the hot summer months? The first thing I noticed about Dubai was the distinct lack of colour - everywhere. I saw a yellow house there and thought the owners must be 'rebels'!! Natural earthy, sandy colours seem to be norm, even for residential housing. Bullshoalsview - you got my intent spot on. That was what I was after! Dub - no I wasn't in the region for the airshow, although I wish I was. It looked awesome and I saw a few planes from the show flying around the city. I was there for 2 days of R'n'R after escorting a person who was deported from Australia back to his homeland of Kuwait.

How lucky for you that there were no tourists to mar your shots! I'm loving the tour.
