On January 8, 2009, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, deployed for their 3rd time since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  After I took his photograph, I spoke to the man, turned out he was a combat veteran of Viet Nam, here at Camp Pendleton this day to say farewell to his Marine son, an infantryman with the battalion.

As he watched the bus leave the assembly area, one could see from his expression that he knew only too well that his son was going to war.   ff

Happy ending!  In the last week of July, 2009, the battalion returned and I saw the father smiling, happy that his son was home safe.

Col, very nice capture of a powerful mixture of emotions - part anguish, part pride.

VOTE Let me be the first and can't believe it.  This category was actually the hardest to choose from.  I ended up w/4 finalist and it took me forever in a day to decide.  I think I picked this one because I can "feel" the mans pain and sorry when looking at him.  I think it touched me the most.  I'm so glad his son returned home safe.
