Joshua Tree Shadow on Rock

We had been hiking at the Joshua Tree Forest in the Mojave National Preserve for about an hour, when I saw this scene several yards off the path. This was a shot that I could not resist capturing -- the positions of the Joshua Tree and the rock were just perfect, almost as if someone had set the rock in that position so that the shadow from the Joshua tree would be cast near sunset. The date was 17 September 2009 at 6:10pm Pacific Time.

    Nice catch, David!

(This is your first post and you've been here since '05?  Why is that?)

Thanks Pat! I'm not sure why it has been so long since my last post. I think I got a little discouraged by the amazing photos that were being posted here and felt mine were inadequate. In any case, I'm back and hopefully will be posting more often!!

Don't get discouraged if you think the pics are that good.  Keep posting and learning and make your pics as good or better.  This place can teach so much.  I credit PH for what I do.

Fine point, Penny - this place is great for learning more about something we all love. Welcome back, Dave, and keep posting. You get honest feedback and you learn for it. That only happens when you post, but you can also learn from the photos and feedback of other folks.

BTW - great shot - It's always nice when Mother Nature cooperates. ;-)

    Beautiful shot!!

I've heard other people say that they didn't feel their photos measured up to others on this site too. Just keep in mind that there are a wide range of photographers here, from snapshooters to professionals so there is no need to compare your photos to anyone elses. That's not to say we all can't learn from one another. I've learned a great deal since I've joined. So, keep em' comin' !!!

  • The image is in the eye of the beholder, if you like it that's what counts if others like it even better.Try using a little fill flash just enough to balance the tree but not affect the shadow. Outdoors a flash can be your friend and it still amazes me the impact it has on an image.

  • Re: using a fill flash. Thank you for the suggestion. I do not have such equipment (I don't think I do, perhaps the camera has a "fill flash" setting?). I definitely think this photo could have been better, and could use suggestions on how to improve (from either a composition standpoint or a technical standpoint). In any case, I will have to try outside flash. Thanks again for the suggestion!

Cool shot! I like the way the shadow of the tree in the foreground is on the rock behind it. Great capture!
