San Francisco is full of beautiful scenes that seem to change from minute to minute. We drove down to the park under the Golden Gate and were lucky enough to get the ideal conditions I had hoped for - patchy fog on a bright, clear day. I took a bunch of shots. This was my favorite.

Then we drove up into the Presidio. June lived there in junior high school (Army brat) and enjoyed the nostalgia. I also wanted to visit the National Cemetery there. The Presidio really was a beautiful post, one of the Army's gems, especially compared to places like Fort Polk, Louisiana. Like most folks connected with the military, I was deeply disappointed when the post was turned over to San Francisco, not a city that has historically displayed much respect for the military. That being said, though, the National Cemetery was well-tended and beautifully kept. I half expected the sacred markers of these fallen veterans to be covered with obscene graffiti.

I had to get this shot, touristy icon though it may be, so we plugged Alamo Square into the GPS and headed off to see the Painted Ladies.

The Golden Gate Park's Flower Conservatory, which was closed the day before, was now open so we headed there. Beautiful place, and we lucked out being the first ones in the door just after the guy in charge of the hose, the hoser in chief, had watered everything.

You've heard of Wet Willy? Meet his sister, Wet Lily.

I think this wet blue thing is an orchid, but I could be wrong. It's happened before. I think it was back in the late fall of 1993... ;-)

They also had this wet green thing.

    Hey Dub;

Some really nice stuff. I think San Fran is probably one of my favorite places, and I've come across some really great photo ops. there.  A few of my absolute favorites are from there. Thanks for sharing these.

Good wet pictures.  Wonderful shot of the bridge, too.

Love the Golden Gate Bridge photo!  Not that any of the others are shabby, mind you.

I had some friends who were being transferred to Fort Polk, so I asked the Major I worked for at the time for his opinion of the place.  He said, "Honey, if the Good Lord wanted to give the world an enema, that's where he'd stick the hose."

Hi Dub, Great photos all of them. I especially liked the shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. National Cemetery is also another great shot, well captured and the colours in it are terrific and I love the composition of it.

I really like the Golden Gate Bridge shot and I'm impressed by all the technical/scientific names for the various growing thingies.

  • The Golden Gate Bridge shot was simply "MISTifying"!  (sorry for the bad pun when it relates to a great photo)

All the "wet" shots are beautiful.  Good work on everything!

I'm a lily fan. Nice shot. The Golden Gate is just the way I remember it from 1978, only your shot has less fog. I always enjoy your post. I'm sorry I have not been active for a while.

Paul - good to see you again. Are you going back down to the beach this year?

Bill - I had to go to skool and everything to learn all those names.

Pat - yep, sounds like the same Ft. Polk - maybe that's why they called it that - Fort Poke.

No Dub, being unemployed has caused me and my family to cancel the beach trip. We did go to Helen, Ga. for the weekend though. I got laid off in March, called back 40 days later, then laid off again after less than 5 weeks of work. The job market is terrible and half a paycheck (unemployment) is better than nothing, but it makes us think about every penny we spend. I am hoping things will turn around soon.

Paul, sorry to hear that things are going so bad. It's a pretty bad economy right now, that's for certain. I hope things turn around for you soon. In the meantime, you can hang out with us here for free. ;-)

The illusive Golden Gate Bridge.... nice capture with not too much fog. I've been there many times and take it as the weather dishes it out. Your angle and from where you shot it works well. these shots have conveyed some of the beauty that is SF. Nice clear shots from the conservatory too.
