Here's a larger view of the photo - hope it's a better size. Crater Lake (larger version)

it will knock it down to 738 x 553 if the image is larger than 1024 x 1024. dont write down what I just typed though because I plan to change it so you have more control over image size. no matter what happens, photographica now stores the original upload and resizes it to whatever dream I come up with. as long as you upload originals you should be fine*.
*of course, now we'll run out of hard drive space :-)

To Coryking - Ahhh...the joys of data storage management. So to maximize server storage space the imported photo's largest dimension should be <= 1024. Right? And is there an optimal resolution as well?
the codebase (I'm going to dive into technical stuff...) right now says "if the image is over 1024x1024 than before we display the image we make a copy and proportinally resize it to under 738x533. If it is under 1024x1024 we just copy it and display the copied original".
That code is broke in three ways. One, peoples originals are *huge* sometimes and if you look, some of the popups are 500kb images! Second, you get no control over the final size of the image.
Worse, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to create the resized image while the URL for the image is created. This is why the site seems slow the first time you view a page of thumbnails... the system creating a resized copy before it spits out a line of HTML. Bad idea. It should be resizing once you view the image... I'll fix this issue, but I have to first upgrade the OS on my image server so I can upgrade it's codebase
In truth, giving you control over the size of popups is a low one on my list and is a difficult usability problem. How to give you control over the final image size without letting you serve giant 1mb images as popups isn't easy. I
am concerned about the displayed image size though. 500kb for 736x553 is a fat image to donwload :-)
Bottom line, the algorithm I use for the size & quality of the popups is subject to change. I will, however, keep the original upload in whatever format you sent it in on disk. What happens after that is still up for grabs.
