The Silent People
Way up in Northern Finland near Suomussalmi in the Kainuu region there is an art installation by Reijo Kela called "The silent people of Kainuu". These are dressed figures made from wood, straw and dirt. They are made and clothed by the Suomussalmi Youth Workshop. The workshop keeps them maintained and attend to their clothing twice a year. The statues' heads come straight from the field.
People often ask what precisely is the idea behind the Silent People. A state of psycho-logical withdrawal? The mute Kainuu soul? A forgotten people? Reijo Kela refuses to provide any answer. What do you think?
Overlooking the field
The path through the field
Part of the crowd
A friendly (and well-dressed) stranger
It was strange being in this field at dusk. There were no other people; it is a sparsely populated area with the exception of all those figures. And someone pointed out what the field would look like if their wooden frames were not dressed and they did not have the straw heads. Consider that.

What an incredible experience that must've been out there by yourself... well kinda... I've heard of these "silent" communities, if you will, but have never seen photos of them. Thanks a lot for sharing!

...though I couldn't help hearing the Coke jingle "I'd like to teach the world to sing..." while viewing them. It's really quite creepy but cool...and the weather and time of day was perfect for this!

Ha! Coke jingle. That's funny. It was creepy and cool. The only sound was the wind. One movie that came to mind out there was the Blair Witch project. But I made it out alive. Thanks for the comments!

Their is a Blairish Witchish factor to this. Now, if you had seen stacked rocks or something - it might be time to quit taking pictures and just bail.
Cool shots!

I found this a very effective way of remembering the dead. I sent my mothers clothes to a charity shop. This makes more sense!
