Hello!

This is a reminder(!).  It is pretty cool watching the tag cloud thingy evolve.  Once we get more stuff tagged, there is all levels of coolness in store for how to navigate this website.  There is no reason we can't pull off some of the stuff flickr does.  But it needs you to work.  What is tagging?

Tagging is a system lets you, the reader and participant of this website, decide how to categorize the vast amount of information at this website.

For example, using tags - Here is a map of all the tags so far.  The larger the tag is, the more popular it is.

The Goal
The goal of tagging is to look at a story and say "wow, I want to see more posts like this one!".  So you view its tags and find a characteristic you would like to see more of.

The Catch
See, the idea behind tagging is that you get to decide what uniquely describes a post.  So the catch is it is up to you to make it work!

This informational reminder has been brought to you buy the letters R, D and J and the number 2.

Thank you,
The Management.

Hm, "Show Tags" doesn't seem to work with Firefox for me. Anyone else having this issue?

  • KayN

Is the cookie monster here, too? The Count? I love the letter J.

  • codepoit
Firefox is working the tags fine on my end. Kody, what extensions do you have?

    - I'm Special!

  • jojames1
DONE! Hah! I'm so proud. I'd like to thank the letters D, J and especially R for getting me through this difficult task. Next assignment, sir!

If it's been a while since visiting this site, refresh. Odds are good the javascript has been cached. Trust me, when it works, it works on firefox. It's the only browser out there as far as I'm concerned.

  • Kody
Hm, strange. Works on my work firefox, but not my home firefox. I'll investigate further tonight... I might have javascript disabled or something...

  • Pyro43
    R, D, J and 2? I have heard of R2-D2, but where does J fit in?

    - Mmmmmm... Multiplicative

  • lilbit
will there be photo organizing here silmilar to what flickr offers when we get everything tagged? because if there is, I'l be taggin' my lil' butt off tonight.

  • austinspace
I'm betting that's the idea, Lil...

    - here and there

  • coryking
it will be on a story level though, not an image one. So you will have stuff orginized by story. The use of stories as the primary unit of content is what seperates Photographica from the savages.

(pssst Rocky, I have a secret for you....I'm the secret tagger. By day I am a professional [stop laughing Kay] human resource generalist. But at night I stalk photography sites and identify posts by their content. Don't give away my secret identity as the Tag Hag.)

I don't understand what tags do

  • lilbit
tags help organize the photos, don't they Cory? so if you like black and white photos for example, you can look through the list of tags to the right and click on black and whites and it brings up photos or stories that have black and white shots in them.

  • austinspace
yes! B1515etc, click on the "View all tags" link in the upper right of this page. You'll see all the tags, with their size corresponding to the number of times they've been used. Then go back and look at all your posts and tag them with "Pittsburg" (for your city shots) and "zoo" (for your zoo shots) and etc. Ultimately you will be able to do just as Lil suggests--bring up all the "zoo" shots on the site--and then compare yours to theirs, for instance.

  • Penny
Cory I really like the way it looks when you click on all tags. It makes you want to read all of them big and small. Keep up the great work you do. Oh and will you get a kleenex already???

  • dennisjb
how do you tag a multiple image post?

  • chef009
No fair, beholden is already done tagging.Oh yea, she does'nt have any post ..but shes sweet.

    - time to change

  • lilbit
dennis, you do it one photo at a time. For example, if a post has let's say a dog, cat and mouse. Open up where you type in the tag name (Show Tags), type in dog, then add, then type in cat and add, and so on. And if they are black and white's of dog's ect. type in black and white also. Hope I'm explaining this so you can understand...lol I've never claimed to be able to explain the right way, but thought I'd save John some time today, I know he has alot of Photos he needs to be taking and that he is SO excited to be doing it, I thought it would be nice he have extra time to do them all...LOL (John will understand what that means ;0)

  • kwsNI
Dirk, the point of tags it to map the content, not the equipment. Unless you're taking photos of your Canon, don't tag them Canon.

    ha!

  • surferguy
Im done..... do you know how long it takes to type zoo animals a thousand times.... my fingers are in knots....

  • lilbit
ha! ha! (that's a double ha)

  • coryking
This whole tag thing is kind of organic and I'm really curious how it will evolve over time. I'd say some kinds of equipment are fine. If you are using a lomo, or some weird exotic pinhole camera or something then by all means tag it. If you are using a fishbowl lens, tag it. But tagging every post "Fuji Finepix" is just trolling to get to the top of the "hot tags" list, even if we all know the FinePix is the best camera on the market :-) So, as for multiple tags, should I let you guys seperate tags out by commas so you can quickly add multiple tags? Flickr does it with spaces, but then you have to remember to put quotes around "multi word tags", which I dont really like. As for the tag cloud - it is getting so big I'm now only showing tags that have three or more stories attached. Bottom line though, the tag system is grown organically. The most important question to ask yourself is "are these tags good ways to find this story?" if they are, and they aren't replicated elseware (like your username) then tag it that way.

  • taters
I don't understand tags either. I have to ask where do I go to type in the tags?

    - taters

  • The Old Guy

Well, I actually did it. I tagged some tags. Not so hard but one can only choose what is offered? Might be more to learn.

Taters, I don't see where we can do that. Only select what is there.

    - say it with photos

  • coryking

you type them in when you write the story.  Back in the day, anybody could tag a story and I'll probably be bringing that back sometime soon.

Old guy, you dont have to use ones that are offered.  What is offered is kind of a "spellcheck" designed to catch when you type "trees" and there is already a tag named "Tree".
