Racing away........

I was asked by one of the coaches of our high school crew team to take some photos for their display case at the school.  I wandered down to the boat house to check things out before I took photos of the team in action.  These are some test shots of the boat house and the shells.  Let me know what you think.

uh...hello? anyone out there??? I really need some feedback please!

I like first and last shots best. Nice job

I too liked the first and last shots best. Nice and crispy, vivid color. The two paddle shots needed something for contrast... I don't know....Shells behind the grill is a good shot too!

Thanks, I actually cropped the paddle shots. Lets see what you think of the original with some contrast... paddle1 paddle2

Shells in the rack is a great shot. I'm not crazy about paddles because I wouldn't have known what they were and I don't have a decent frame of reference for them. The last one needed a focal point.

Shells behind the grill I would've taken a wider angle shot to maybe get the entire boat(s) in the pic. First and last shots are ok, but lacking something and I can't quite figure out what. Did you get action shots, too? I'd like to see some of them......

The paddle shots (not cropped) had distracting and not very attractive backgrounds, so I can see why you cropped them... but like Smalley, you just couldn't tell what they were. The coach gave you a pretty big challenge! Hopefully you had more interesting subject matter when you got to take the action shots of the team!

Very colorful and some neat angles.

I like the last one and I agree that a more focus would help. Hmmm maybe the second picture as a b&W... that would look very good.

I haven't been out with the team yet. I just went out to scout around and test some things this weekend. I will probably take some shots this week if the weather holds out. One thing I did find out is that the sun comes out right behind the building around 2pm which will make shots of the boat house hard. I may have to do those shots on a weekend during a practice. But I am excited. It is my first offical project and has already led to another one: barn photos for a book someone is writing. I will post the photos as I take them. Thanks!

I liked behind the grill best. I thought it was the best composed. The first shot is technically fine but, to me, the shell shooting out of frame in the top right and the superhot spot of sunlight are very distracting. Maybe a different crop or angle would have helped. Aren't you sorry you asked for more feedback now. 8o) Good eye though and I think you're right there's a shot in all the oars hanging on the wall.
