Comp. and Focus with Shinigami

By enigmaticfaerie written 1/7/08 7:32 AM, published 1/8/08 10:44 AM

I got bored the other night when I got home from work.  I was tired of not having picked up my camera.  I was planning on taking some sunset shots.  While waiting for that I figured my cat Shinigami would do.

Shinigami 2
Shinigami 3
Shinigami 4

The first shot was taken with the natural light coming in from the window and the last 3 were taken with the on camera flash.

Comments, critiques and suggestions are always welcome.

Something about #2 intrigues me. Maybe it's the darker fur coming back off the top of the eye the way it does, but I like that one very much. Focus not bad either, it gets softer at the nose, but the focal point is the eye and that keeps your attention right there. Interesting name for a cat.

Thanks. They were taken with my 90mm macro lens, O.G. which accounts for the shallow dof. (and she's actually my brother's cat. The name is japanese for god of death.)

I love the nose shots. Especially #3. Who would have thought I'd pick that one out?

I really like the focus and composition of 2 and 3. And I like the first shot as well. In 2, she's definitely looking like she's ready for war. 4 is okay, but not great - too tightly cropped or too close, maybe...I've been looking at it all day and I just can't figure out why it doesn't grab me and make me want to look longer.

It might be the shadows fuzzy. I feel the same way toward it. I like it, but I don't. And I think the look of war was becase she was tired of my camera being in her face with my bright @$$ flash. I got tired of her closing her eyes on front shots, so I started taking them from the side.

Like the natural light one & the second one. Such an intent stare. Glad you included the last one so we could see what a pretty calico she is.
