More B&W film shots from the west

Just a few for today.  I've finally finished scanning all my negatives. Well... not all.  I've finished reviewing all my negatives and selectively scanning and being even more selective after that as to which ones I finished processing.  So out of 288 frames, I scanned 50.  Out of 50 I only edited about 20.

So today, I'll bring you three from Arches National Park that I liked.  And I would like your opinion on which is the best out of the two Arch shots (one's just a shot of the fins I got to walk across).

 Double O 1     Double O 2

Sometime next week I'll conclude my southwest trip with one last post.  Thanks for looking and have a great weekend everyone!

  • Interesting, I just commented, and the it accepted my comment, but nothing showed up.  Must have said something wrong.  One more time.

I like the angle of the first one, but it looks a little clutter for some reason.
2 looks 'tourist-ty', but shows off the arc nicely.
Of these, I prefer the second.

(Actually I prefer double O 7, but I guess he's not in the running.)

  • Funny you say the second looks touristy.  It's the back of the arch where I'm sure jenna and I weren't supposed to have crawled through the arch to get back there.  But we did....  and the first is actually the "front."  That was just the best angle I could get of it because of all the "clutter" as you put it.
I had a third angle (another from the back), but somehow I uploaded the first one twice...

I like the first one more, it seems more interesting with the unusual angle.

    #2.

My personal pet peeve on many B&W photos is the lack of contrast between the subject and fore/background.  O1 has great contrast with the sky, and the foreground looks good other than the bushes, but the bushes blend right into the rock, giving it that cluttered look.

  • Thanks, aaron.  I'll definitely look into fixing that (either in PS or when/if I print it in the dark room).  There were a lot that I ruled out because of that very thing... but I guess I let the other elements in this photo cloud my judgement on the shrubbery.

You've got your work cut out for you on editing that.  Problem is the features on the rock look like the shrubs.  Like the 2nd bush from the right - there are marks on the rocks behind it that look just like the leaves.  Also, about 1/3 of the way from the right there's streaks running down the rocks that almost looked like another bush at first glance.

I do like the perspective in it though.  If the bushes weren't there to begin with, it'd be a fantastic shot.  The contrast of the rock with the sky behind and the sand before is great, those bushes just keep throwing me.

  • I know... stupid national parks and their shrubbery.  Too bad you can't just uproot them, take the photo and plant them back.  Ah... scenarios from a photographer's dream world ;-)

Only other thing I can think of would be to selectively color a little bit of it, giving it some contrast that way.

  • I know the first one .. O 1  .. is Black & White but I don't like the tone - it's not the same as the tone in O 2 ... It makes the shot look like something out of a coal mine ... Good job on O 2 crawling through the Arch to get it was worth it!!

Good angles on both.......kwsNI is right in my opinion about the contrast. The black and white can hinder the true depth and tones given by color....so you need to do a little adjustment in post editing...

In PS2 I go to Image -adjustments -shadow/highligh t..(make sure to expand the options in this box )......then you have a great set of tools to change the depht of tones thru this applacation. At least for me, this is an easy tool to get good results from.

I love the angle in O 1.  The b&w gives them an old time feeling. :o)

Double O 2 for me. I like the way that the eye gets lead through the arch. It starts on the lower righ thenthrough the arch and then to teh background. The first one seem more abstract since it is difficult to get an orientation. It almost looks like it was shot horizontal then turned veritcal. It also hard to see the detail with the lower arch but that could be a drawback of my monitor or the resizing for the internet. Both are nice pictures.
