I can't find merit in the first shot at all...sorry. Second one has some possibilities--I'd like a little more detail, little more depth to get very excited. But it's great to play with new things.

I'm going to have to agree with smalls on the first one ... just to much of the image is missing to even be an abstract ... I don't feel much different on the second one ... But what is important is that you had your camera and took some shots!!
what works for me in the first one is that the only piece that's really clear is what is in the shadow of the post to the right. maybe you had to be there for that one.
i'll have a second go at the crawdad, see if i can pull any more detail out of it.
What happened to blow out these photos? Just read your profile and saw your camera is a Nikon D50. I have one and it is a really good camera. Never got photos like these blown out ones. Only thing I can think that you did was too set the shutter speed too slow.Camera always took good pictures even if I didn't.
i'm not always looking to get 'perfect' pics. my main aim is to get something that's interesting to look at. personally, i like high contrast, abstract, massive negative space, and off-center shots...and yes, even blown out shots.
Well they are blown way out. But I have to say the first one I don't even know what I am looking at. The second one I can tell that is a crawdad.

I looked at the first one and thought ASCII, guess the nerdness in me is coming out.

the crawdad works best for me... maybe because of the color, and it's really the background that is blown out, giving more focus to the main subject.
