Holga Halloween Happenings

How about some spooky pictures for Halloween?

I recently purchased a $20 Holga camera.  It shoots 120 film, and the quality is, well, interesting .  These shots are from the first roll:

  • Nice... I hadn't even read the word Holga yet but as soon as I opened the first I knew that they were taken with it.  With the exception of the images being a little flat, I really like the first two.  A bit of contrast would do them wonders.  Because of the plastic lens in dianas and holgas, the shots are likely to be flatter than say with a 35mm or a hasselblad (or any camera that shoots 120).  But I love the quality and uniqueness of dianas and holgas.  I recently bought my diana (back in July) and have just now taken the time to post some of my shots this week if you want to take a look through my dashboard or just by scrolling down the page.

BTW...I really, really like your comp in the second shot with the first shot coming in second.

  • Thanks, Engimaticfaerie!  I haven't heard of Dianas before.  I like your Sante Fe market shot.  These little cameras impart a feeling that is hard to achieve with more perfect cameras.  It also gave me a reason to get back into the darkroom, if only for film processing.  I scanned the negatives, then adjusted the histogram levels with PS.  There wasn't much contrast to work with, as my exposures where quite off.

Oh so Dianas are like Holgas. I thought they looked similar!

I must admit the shots that plastic lenses take are growing on me. Who knows, maybe I'll experiment with one one day! Though having to buy film for them is a pain, haha. I've been spoilt by my little SD cards. :P I like the comp on the first two, and the last is spooky!

  • nice shots but personally I would not go back to film. I love my digital cameras. but it would be fun to try out. Have fun with your new toy.

Interesting, but I have shoeboxes full of similar images made with 120 and a Kodak folding camera a little while back!
