I am sort of breaking the rules a bit by entring a photo that I did not take this week. In my defense, I did take the picture this year and I have been planning to turn this into a B&W, so thanks for the impetus to do so. GlasgowBW

  • Gorgeous shot, beautiful resolution and composition.  The clouds seem a bit over-powering--did you PS them?

  • Are you sure this is a photograph? Very artsy, love the clouds, it really makes the shot!

  • Very definitely a photograph (or four). As noted, the clouds are from a collection of sky shots that I maintain. The day was absolutely gray which made for nice muted colors and not too much contrast, but the sky was just a gray mass in the originals. As for the main subject, I took three exposures (-1,0,+1) and did a HDR with them (hence the artsy look). the next step was the replacement of the sky and a bit of cropping. For the B&W I converted to greyscale and played with brightness/contrast, curves and shadow/midtone/highlights. I also corrected the perspective of the building some and cropped a bit more off of the bottom. For the record, all adjustments were done in Paint Shop Pro X2 (so I can truthfully say that I did not Photoshop the picture!). Because I am fairly happy with the evolution of this photo, here is the mid-exposure of the original series for comparision. BW_original I do love the digital darkroom!

I really appreciate the comments on the amount of resoution as this is an example of knowing the camera you are using and using it within its capabilities. The picture was shot with a 5mp Panasonic FZ20 superzoom at about 35mm equivalent. I sometimes think this camera takes better pictures than my newer 10mp camera.

Love the shot!  Lots of great detail and the clouds make it look almost like a haunted house.  :o)

The image fits the B&W theme nicely and is beautiful, however it has much too much manipulation to fit the intent of the challenge.

The buildings look amazing, I love the detail and the resolution.  But the more I look at it, the more the clouds don't look quite right to me, I think I would prefer a more subtle sky so as not to distract from the buildings.

Beautiful work on the building...I think the reason the clouds aren't right is because they are to big to be that low in the sky. Also, they seem to be at a strange angle.

Nice shot and nice b/w conversion. I like the way the clouds loom over the city.

I love the shot.  The cloud enhancement does give it a very artsy look.  I really lilke how it turned out.  Maybe something in a batman movie.

Love the tone of the building and the cropping. I would have to agree that the clouds had a odd feeling to my eye.....seems like a valcano going off ( very stormy like)....and they almost seem as though they are fliped.

But with that said, the shot is very nice....good work.
