My camera club’s theme for this month photo competition is … “Delicious” … This will be my entry … “Red Delicious” … This image evolved from just a couple of Washington Red Delicious apples to this  …

Your comments are always appreciated … Thanks for looking!!

  • Color balance (positioning) appears to be ok. Colors might be a tad dull, but I'll chalk that up to this monitor.  There might be a little too much space on the left - personal opinion only.  About the only thing missing is some of those little crackers.

Delicious indeed! The only thing I might change is cropping a little off the left. A cork in the bottle would add a nice touch but I think it's great... and yummy!

    Good luck!

  • Beautiful Stan!

The only thing I can say is a couple white cards to the front and sides of the still life would have added some highlights on the wine glass and wine bottle.

Another trick is to attach a piece of crumpled foil on the back of the wine glass to add highlights and put a little transparency in the wine.

The lighting on the fruit and cheese is perfect.

    Wonderful still life!

Nice work, it's a spiffy shot. XD I agree with MrQ on the left side.

  • Love the shot overall.  I think the saturation is great, along with a wonderful arrangement and composition.  My only critiques is that the glass starts to blend into the background.  Having a small sliver of mirror placed behind the glass slightly elevated will help kick light back up on to the back of the glass.  Or try a piece of white board to help kick back some light to the back and separate it from the background.

Really well done...I feel the white cards could add to the shot...and heres another IMO, I would like to see the lower part of the plates edge. If your shooting above the plate or in a downward position, then the edge doesn't have to be a part of the shot. But my minds eye see the light on top of the plate and no hint of the lower frame of the plate. I think this small thing would add a good dimension to the over all look.

  • I agree with the white card and tinfoil ideas. But I know that for me, budget prevents me from using  high quality strobes or lighting, and what i noticed is that I can see your reflection in the glass and bottle. any ideas on how to prevent that? otherwise, I love it and am thinking it looks like just the thing for a picnic to brighten up my day. thanks for sharing!

I like it, great composition.  I agree with chef the plate cuts off and looks like you cropped it too tight.  Like the colors.  Good luck!  :o)

  • Mmm delicious it is!  I'm no expert on still life-so looks pretty good to me other than a slight crop on the left.  Now can I have that bottle of wine?

Beautiful shot, Stan.  I'd frame it the way it is but the neat thing about this site is that there are always people giving hints on how to make the shot even better.

Now, wine and cheese at Stan's house!!!

Well done, Stan.  I saw the same thing with the wine glass that enigma tf did, buy did not know how to fix it, but she did, so I learned something too.  Happy TG.

  • WOW!! ... Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions!! ... This image was shot in the light tent that advertises here on Photographica ... I probably should have been more careful where I placed the lights ... I did crop off some of the left side but thought the shot looked to square so I put it back ... Should have gone with my first instinct (thanks Mr. Q and all the others who suggested this!!) … Zaleagirl not sure if that’s my reflection or if it is were the light didn’t wrap around the bottle or glass … next time I will have to be more aware of that!!... Chef the plate was sitting on a piece of granet that didn't photograpgh well so I took it out in post-processing!!

Putting the tin foil (thanks Mack!!) or mirror (thanks EF) to reflect light up into the wine glass are awesome suggestions!! … I wanted to use red wine but I don’t like red wine so I got the cheapest bottle I could find … It was under $6.00 and at Whole Foods … it didn’t even have a cork only a screw on lid (thanks Angie) (LOL)!!

Next time I will submit it to my camera club AFTER I put it up on Photographica!!

I'm a great procrastinator ... The deadline to submit the image was Midnight this past Monday ... I didn't get the shot done and submitted until 11:45 PM!!!

Thank you again one and all for your most helpful comments and suggestions ... I really learned a lot from them and can hardly wait to put them into practice!!

very nice shot. i agree about the wine glass, the other things that bother me is that the top of the wine bottle is to close to the top. the other, is the way the front of of the tray is bent up, it takes away from the bottom.

  • Gosh, you really got some good suggestions here, it helped to read through all of them...the first thing that caught my eye when I viewed was the reflection in the wine glass (before even noticing the 'food'..good color and lighting on them..

Would be interesting to know if your camera club came up with some of the same suggestions you received here.

  • The shot won the blue ribbon in my Division (Advanced) for the club challange!! ... I received 24 out of 27 points ... Unfortunately they only mentioned the positive aspects ... This was an electornic compatition so the image was projected and the wine glass and bottle were not an issue nor was the base ... I guess the image I posted here was a little darker ... Out of three images that I submitted each won a Blue Ribbon!!

  • I see great comments too.  I did feel drawn to look at the bottom of the plate too.  It was very delicious and appetizing. Congratulations.
