One of my favorite things to try to capture is a horse's eye, but I can never seem to get the composition quite right.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Any comments, suggestions, or critiques would be much appreciated!

  • Hmmmm... I'm not sure what to say really.  I would suggest either more or less face.  Having most of the head but no snout or ears just looks kinda strange, and makes it hard to compose.  Have it all though might create more of a 'portrait' rather than an attempt to emphasize the eye.  So I would get closer to the eye and try different angles perhaps.  Not just straight on.  Tilt the camera diagonally in order to remove anything but the horses face (no background).

As for the fun ones, I almost like the 1st of the two.  It's crazy, yet it could be believable.

  • Personally, I like ShyEyeedit as the best composition. I also like ChantoOrtonwarmedit even though the horse is looking in almost completely the wrong direction. I'd also point out that if the eye is meant to be the focus of the image, I'd 'shop it a little to make the eye stand out more - brighten up the eye itself, so that the viewer's eye is drawn to it.

I agree with all of the above too.

  • My favorite 'portrait' of my horse was a closeup of his eye.  My only regret was that I framed it horizontally rather than vertically - just would have made a better portrait.

So, I suggest that you zoom in and fill the frame with the eye, and frame it (or crop it) in 'portrait' mode.

Have fun and good luck - and let us see what you got!
