Or, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

One of the stops I made while in Memphis, was the Gibson guitar factory and retail store. All I can say is..........  Oh, my....... I've played Gibsons since I was a lad and it was most interesting and exciting to be able to see them manufactured. The biggest disappointment during our tour was this. Here we were in a factory producing state-of-the-art musical instruments, while the factory tour guide (not our cute tour guide, you understand) was doing a Rudy Vallee ( http://www.rudyvallee.com/ ) impersonation with a 9" long megaphone as he spoke to about 30 people in a noisy factory. Here then are a few shots from my stop at the Gibson factory and store.

Gibson Sides

Gibsons Glued and Clamped

One of the Guitar Luthiers (A luthier is one one who makes stringed musical instruments (as violins or guitars)

Gibson Bodies Glued and Tied

Caps and Gibsons

Gibsons Galore This is when I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed strumming on one of the Gibsons from the wall - a beautiful Hummingbird flat top. Mmmmm Mmmmm Nice, indeed.

  • Nice shots in the factory considering (I'm sure) low lighting conditions.  I've never seen a guitar put together, but thanks to cable I have seen a dulcimer put together.  I really like 'glued and tied' and 'gibsons galore' (My brother would die and go to heaven as well if he saw it).

Funny you should title your story that way. That was the first thing I thought when I saw you were in Memphis... Beale Street, Elvis, Gibson guitars, to say nothing of the photo opps the architecture and the river offer. Oh and doen't forget the BBQ!!

    I love this set!!

Ashton, no Elvis. But be sure to watch for the third and final chapter - Beale Street.

And does anyone remember the song with these lyrics?

Down by the M-I-Crooked letter-Crooked letter-I... Crooked letter-Crooked letter-I... Hump back-Hump back-I  Mississippi... Flowin' down to New Orleans.

Well it flows right past my Tennessee home, where history was made by Steamboat Bill.... M-E-M-P-H-I-S...  Memphis is the town I mean.

Way down yonder in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten, what a wonderful thrill it is to be, down in Memphis, Tennessee.

Down by the M-I-Crooked letter-Crooked letter-I... Crooked letter-Crooked letter-I... Hump back-Hump back-I  Mississippi... Flowin' down to New Orleans.

And if you'd like to hear this song, don't forget.....  Tuesday Tunes - June 19th - Grafton, Wisconsin - USA

  • I never knew that song, but I was taught the "M-I-Crooked letter-Crooked letter-I... Crooked letter-Crooked letter-I... Hump back-Hump back-I" in school to help us remember how to spell Mississippi (in 1st or 2nd grade).

And just some silly information... but FSU's fight song spells out Florida State at the very end (F-L-O-R-I-D-A! S-T-A-T-E!  Florida State, Florida State, Florida State!).  FSU is located in Tallahassee and I had a friend who grew up in good ole' tally tell me that they sing the end of the fight song to the kids to help them learn and remember how to spell Florida.
