• That nesting Crane is a new one for me! Thank You! They just seem all elbows, knees & neck-it's hard to visualize them on a nest...Your Male Warbler is cute as a button...the Ruffled reminds me of that mad bluebird they made into t-shirt...Maybe you should look into that...the Hummer a doll too...sorry no critique...sometimes you have to take the good with the good...

I like all the shots, but sandhill seems a bit blown and I'm thinking that a tighter crop would make it look better, think ruffled needs a tighter crop as well. I'm with Andrea though it does remind one of the angry bluebird...ruffled Warbler, works for me!! Nesting and Hummer are great!

  • These are all great shots PoM!  Ruffled is my favorite because the background blur really sets of the little guy.  I do agree with Ashton that if you cropped out the leaf on the right and brought the top down just a little it would improve the image (let's say it's a 9.5 now, that would make a 10).  I also agree that you need to get rid of some of the grass above the nesting crane.  It doesn't bring anything to the picture and keeps the eye from focusing on the subject.  This is a great set though, I'm envious!

Fantastic shots! The warblers are so vibrant! I can't believe you caught the hummingbird sitting still, every time I try they've always moved by the time I'm ready to shoot. Wonderfully done!

  • Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. The sandhill crane is not a very sharp shot so I thought if I cropped it any tighter it would make it all the more noticeable. I was quite a distance away and didn't want to disrupt her or make her upset by getting closer. I am really hoping to capture a shot of the baby after the egg(s) hatch! I will try cropping tighter on the fluffy warbler but I think I will run into the same problem. The lighting wasn't good that day so the shot isn't as sharp as it should be. I really appreciate the comments...it really makes me take look at the shots a different way

    Thanks!

I would have to say I agree with all the critiques and I also agree with you POM.  Sometimes a crop doesn't work especially if the shot is soft.  Regardless that is some good birding.

I found myself the other day at a friends who lives in town not in the country on thier deck.  Well thier son loves watching birds.  He is 3 and said "Big bird"  I looked up....OMG it was an eagle and it soared over us for about 10 minutes and I did not have my camera!

  • Oh, Penny, what a disaster--Photo op w/o equipment.

The crane really blends in with the surrounding, could not see it good..The nester is my choice of these...wonder if it would have been better if the brown twig was not in the pic..amazing you got the hummer just sitting there, (am so envious of all of you who do this, the one at my place never is still long enough for me to try.)

  • That's funny Penny. I can just see the little boy saying "Big bird" and the look on your face to see that it was actually a Bald Eagle! Figures....photo op and no camera! Darn!! :-)

  • I agree with everyone else, and ruffled warbler is my choice.  I love the DOF and comp but I don't think the crop is quite necessary.

  • ruffled for me...although I am amazed at the wonderful way you capture all the wildlife. I don't seem to have much success with anything that has wings.

Phantoms wife...only thing that seems to work for me is patience. I sit and sit and sit and wait :-) And...shoot lots cuz generally 1 out of 6 to 10 turns out decent enough. :-)
