Red Rock Canyon is located about 30 minutes West of the Las Vegas Strip ...

My local Camera Club believes that any photo taken outdoors between roughly 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM is not worth taking because of the quality of light ... and they judge images based on that ...

So I ventured out to Red Rock Canyon last week at 5:30 AM ... All of the attached images were taken prior to 8:00 AM ... I will let you be the "judge" as to how they look!! ...

Your comments, suggestions and ... yes criticism ... are very much appreciated!!  ...

Thank you for looking!!

  • You need to post more often my dear man.  These images are fantastic. And I'll have to keep that time frame in mind when I'm out and about around Santa Fe this July.  The light is beautiful, the contrasts lovely and the compositions superb.  Great job.  I really like the white flower as well.

Well worth getting out early!  All wonderful, I just love the last 4!  The sky is beautiful, the colors in the rocks and the foreground are also great.  :o)

5 is my favorite.  So crystal clear!  I also really like 3.  In 8 the sky looks kind of pixellated where it goes from lighter blue to darker blue.

  • I am truly humbled by your kind words ... and all from people that I truly admire and respect ... Thank You!! ...

Penny - You are right about #8 and the pixilation ... Probably the result of to much PS ...

Lori #7 is the result of a little Orton Effect and #8 is just a little general PS work (I tried HDR on one of the shots - but it just didn't turn out ... I still don't know what I'm doing with HDR ... Someday I hope to figure it out!!)

  •       " God, indeed, blessed America " but it takes great "image makers", such as all the members of this photo journal, to exibit and show all americans and the world, just how blessed we are .              (Good tools and skills help)  Thanks for sharing,Stan.

  • Stan, the time of day did the trick with the color of the hills. Same is true of the big canyon, the beauty depends on the light... and the photographer too. Excellent job!

The coloring and the strata remind me a lot of Bryce canyon. Bryce (needs a little PS work) Red Rock may have it in color! Got to make that a stop if I get west again.

    - So shoot already!!
