Several days ago in the Photography Discussion Forum I posted a link to an article on …

... “How to Write a Critique of a Photograph" ...

One of the greatest things from this article is the fact that you don't have to be an expert in photography to write your critique … you just right how you feel about the image!!

A number of the people who looked at this article felt that it should be made available to everyone … so here goes …

This is the link:

http://www.myshutterspace.com/group/constructivecriticism/forum/topic/show?id=1177697%3ATopic%3A156345

There is a PDF file at the end of the article that is easier to read and can be downloaded to your computer.

I hope you find this article as helpful as I did …

I have also included some images that I have converted with the use of the Orton Effect to give you something to practice on … Zion National Park ... Zion National Park  ... Bridge in Zion National Park

Stan I love what you did with you'r photo. What program do you use to get this orton effect? And the artical comes in handy too. Thank you. ;)

I guess I missed the other reference to this article - it is REALLY helpful, even to critique myself!!Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks, Stan, ata way to go in making that article available! I have saved my copy to the desktop so that it is always right there to read.

Now, your Orton effect. It makes me feel warm all over. All three, but I think I like #3 the best. I would have gone for #2, but the sky.... the sky is way to light. I would have played with it a bit. I have gone so far on light skys as to cut them from the picture to a new layer and then beat it down to what I want in blues. Sometimes Picasa works for me with the gradual tint feature, you can even slant that for sloping horizons.

I'm sure you know all that and you probably left it as is just to give us something to chew on. Overall, I like them.

    - So shoot already!!

The bridge is the most appealing to me. The second one just seems a little overdone for my taste, I think the yellows might be too overpowering. Always great to try new things, though, and I think it works very nicely in the bridge photo.

Thanks for the article link. I will definitely give it a read.

Thank you for the article - I think that it will be helpful.  I have to work on learning the Orton effect because I really like it.  My feeling is that your second shot is the best one, but I also like the last one.  I like the curvy twist of the tree limbs in the second one.

Thank you all for your comments ...

Ralph - Funny you should mention the sky in that second shot _ This morning (Sunday) I'm going out to photography some clouds (we dont see many in Las Vegas) ... One of the shots I'm going to add some clouds to is this one - I still have the original shot to work with  ... I'm also going to take 'Phantoms' (and my wife's) suggestion and rework the Orton Effect so its not so overdone! ...

Lidljo I would be happy to tell you how its done - it really is quite simple and you control how much or how little of the effect you want ... it works great with flowers!!

    - Out of Focus!!

The article is a fantastic read.  I read it when you posted it to the photography discussion forum.

As for the shots, I agree with a little less orton on them.  Love the colors though and the comps are great, espeically in the last.
