The beginning of the never-ending

By enigmaticfaerie written 6/2/08 6:30 AM, published 6/2/08 6:38 AM

I have nothing else to show, so I'm going to warn you guys ahead of time.  Due to many numerous reasons (work, gas prices, time restraints) I have very little time to photograph.  But I have been going out at least once a week and taking some shots of the numerous flowers we have growing in and around my house.  So for the time being, you guys will just have to suffer through my flower shots (I'll try and make the posts quick, simple and hopefully bearable).

Today, Amaryllis!

1    2     3     4     5

Tomorrow, irises.  And don't worry, this shouldn't last too long.  I went to Bailey's 2nd birthday party yesterday and I hope to have those images edited for next week.  Also, this weekend I'm heading down to Tallahassee for some roommate reunions and serious beach time.  This is by no means the only week that I'll have flower shots, but I hope this will be the last week where I only post flower shots.  Thanks for looking and bearing through this.

I love flowers. I know some people don't. But the endless variety and beauty not to speak of the colors and color schemes speak volumes of the one who created them.

I love #1 and #5 is quite intriguing.

I wish anonymous users weren't assholes.

Yep, that's definitely what I wish.  Next time, heed my warning and keep your mouth shut unless you have something constructive to say.

Constructive: All would make fine backgrounds for some other shots. "Due to many numerous reasons", as funny as that statement is in itself, followed by "I have very little time to photograph.", would make one wonder why you have so much time to post and why you'd post fuzzy blurs of "flowers".

" you guys will just have to suffer", "Thanks for looking and bearing through this.", tells us that you knew exactly what you were putting us through. Why? Do you feel an overwhelming need to post, something, anything?

#1 at least was a picture of something. It was dark though and DOF was too short. Had I taken any of those they would have been in the bin post haste.

No one expects you to post every picture you take.

And now I've been robbed of yet another ten minutes of my precious time.

People: Is it a good idea to encourage this nonsense? This girl is brutal in her "critiques" of others' work. When we say anything constructive or critical of her "work" she's extremely defensive, more excuses than most could ever conjure.

I'm only defensive with Anonymous users.  I say man up and get an ID to go along with those words.  It seems you have something against me personally because I don't see you commenting on anyone else's posts.

And second, I'm not trying to be defensive with my excuses but possibly be informative.  I take every critique to heart and consider them as best as I can, but if I feel there was a reason for the way something looks the way it does, I'll provide the information as support to the photos.  Then if you still feel the same way, fine.  I'm not saying you're wrong.  And I never said that I was right.  I'm just suppling as much to my side of the story as possible.  I try to make it a conversation about photography.  Conversations help you to learn.

Third, if you think my critiques are brutal sign up for a university art class and then see if you feel the same way.

Fourth, the warning is only because I know some of people on the site don't like flowers.  So if they know they don't like to see flower shots, they can pass over it.  Just because it's posted doesn't mean you have to look at.  So no, I'm not shoving it down anyone's throat.

Lastly, if you're time is so precious why are you even bothering to look at this site at all?  Or for that matter, even comment?  Other than to make this a hostile environment that nobody wants to be in.

I enjoy flower photographs. Do you have any?

My time is precious and I choose to spend some of it here. I have even enjoyed a number of your stories. But of late, you are so full of yourself and your work is so lacking, I have to wonder if there's something else not going on in your life that you insist on posting stories you yourself know are inadequate, sub par. You're off your game. You know it and I'm pointing it out. Were you in my employ I'd offer you a vacation. If you didn't take it I'd hand you your walking papers.

You're not qualified to teach university art classes, get over yourself. You hear but you don't listen. You are too defensive. When asked about shooting information, you guess. I can guess. When I say a shot is dark, you say it's because you don't have editing software or because it was overcast or, or, and or. Excuses. You're posting volumes. People want quality, not quantity.

This is a word from the wise, not to the wise.

Lori: You're several  levels above. The foul mouthed kid could learn a lot from you.

Just my opinion. [And this isn't a false name or identity, it's anonymous.]

Never said I was.  I just said that if you think my critiques are harsh, try going to a university art class.  I'm peaches and cream compared to them.

If you say I'm off my game, maybe I am.  I'm asking for critiques here, but I appreciate them from people who have the decency to have a username to go by.  Most of us here know each other.  Not in the sense of face-to-face but on the site.  We know who we are, what kind of personality each other has, what's going on in each other's lives hardships and happy times.  It's a family here and when you insist on being an anonymous user ,then you're an outsider and most are going to treat you as that.  Especially since about 3 months back we did have a wise a$$ (as Kitzi says) that terrorized our "family."
Many talented photographers left because of it and other reasons.  All of which I appreciated every bit of critique and advice they gave me and looked up to them as an example to follow.  I learned a lot from them in the year and a half I've been here.  I wouldn't be anywhere at near the level (whatever level it might be) had it not been for them.  They taught me a lot and you can ask a few who were here when I first joined, my ego is no where as big as it was when I first logged on to this site.

I've been humbled by critiques.  But you didn't critique the work at first.  You made a snide commented and I made one back.  I retorted mostly because you're an AU.  I probably would have asked any user to elaborate.  And if you notice... I haven't made a single excuse for any of the photos above.  I took them and I posted them.  I've taken offense with you today because you're taking this past just the photograph.  You're taking your precious time to insult me.
I guess at a lot of stuff because I don't have the information in front of me to refer to (I'll stop from now on. If I can't remember, I can't remember.  Who cares about conversation anyway, right?).  I can remember the day's conditions and what lens I was using, but specifics such as ISO, Shutterspeed and f-stop are not things you always remember after firing the shutter.  And I can estimate or guess what they probably were based on the day's conditions and how I normally shoot the subject presented in the story.

    BS.

I did not insult, I simply told you how it is. You chose to take my comments as insults. My initial comment was snide, at most. Certainly not deserving of calling me an asshole.

I asked you about shooting information before, as I said. That was about a series of dark shots at a Ren Faire. You replied you shot with an ISO of 640, for instance. Were there a setting of 640 ISO, the shots would have been a lot brighter. I suspect the 640 was a Tv though, not an ISO. Had you not gotten that so wrong, we could of  had an intelligent conversation.  You guess the Av was 5.6, maybe even 8. Good lord. All nonsense. Again, when asked, tell, or say "I don't know.".

If Anonymous Users are so frowned upon, why is the option there? That's rhetorical. I know why they're there.

All that other tripe about months ago this, and family that, has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Watch your foul mouth and thicken your skin. I've complimented plenty of your photos.

Read the copy in your story again and realize that many, many people come by and look, not just your "family". After reading that copy, many will say as I did with my snide remark, "Then why post it at all if it's what you say it is?".

I called you such because of the previous incident.  And I had/have a feeling I might know who you are and why you've chosen to harass me.  There's no proof, so I'm not going to assume it's who I'm thinking it is.  And yes it is relevant.  If we have another anonymous tyrant then it all applies to the way we react to you.

And yes, I do have an ISO of 640.  There are more than just 1 stop incriments of ISOs, just like shutterspeeds and f-stops.  Because if I had been using a shutterspeed of 1/640 I would hope to god there wasn't any blur.  Most action can be stopped at 1/60.  So 1/640 is overkill.  And you referring to Tv and Av modes are purely canon based projections.  You're talking about shutterspeed and aperture priority, respectively.

No we don't know why the option is here, we've had many serious discussions about getting rid of the anonymous user comments.  I'm fully for it and have been for a while.  Why cory still has it, I don't know but I'm sure he has a good reason.

And to get back to pictures.  They're exactly how I intended them to be.  Whether you like them or don't I don't care.  It was your opinion.  Never said it was wrong.  The way you expressed your opinion has been the problem in this discussion for me the entire time.

It was the attitude presented with the "critique."  Which I still haven't seen.  You've only told me I posted crap.  I don't find that a critique, but an opinion.

Wow.  So, I did miss this dialog. I commented early and missed the rest. The Anon isn't worth your getting ulcers over EF. He is one out of many and if your photos were as he says, more of us, I for sure, would let you know. I believe if you think about that you will realize the truth of it.

See, I don't get this. Anon...if you dislike her work, if you don't like her personality, if you think she is "full of herself", why don't you just get an account, hit the ignore button, miss her posts and let everyone who wants to enjoy them, enjoy them? This rancor is exactly what has cost this site some of its best photographers. I think Cory should STOP letting anyone post anon. You could look but not speak, unless you wanted to be identified. That way I could hit my ignore button on you and wouldn't have to wade through all this crap when all I wanted was to comment on EMF's post.

EMF sweetie, I have to agree to some extent with your stalker.  It's well known that I can't stand damn flower photos--most of them are the same thing, over and over, with precious little thought or creativity.  I'm also not fond of most abstracts--too often they're an excuse to take a fuzzy picture and call it art.  So, obviously, you've hit two of my personal prejudices.

I can't get really thrilled about these because the focus is random, not deliberate, and the composition is rather aimless.

When people shoot a flower and make me see it in a new way or an abstract and make me see shapes that are pleasing and creative, I can get interested.

By the way, the discussion of ISO was confusing.  ISO isn't the same as shutter speed and it sounded like you had the two interchanged.  I may have read that incorrectly.

Geez.  When will I learn to walk away from a fight?  And I didn't even start this one!

You held your tongue for awhile but then you delivered a critique I could have but totally lacked the patience for.

I've had second thoughts, EMF.  I am a totally worthless pile of horse manure with anger issues.  My negative comments about your post arise mostly from my childhood bed wetting problems which are still not completely resolved to this day.  As a matter of fact, I'm sitting in a wet diaper right now.  Probably why I'm just a little on the cranky side this day.  I hope you will accept my sincere apology.  Meanwhile, I'll try to remember to take my meds.   Sorry, Terretts gets the best of me sometimes.

Now, I'm sure you all realize that this is not the anon who has been harrassing EMF.  The anonymous user feature is available, so I say we all comment anonymously as the harrasser.

Come on everbody...join in.  What kind of wild comments can we make up about this guy or gal in his or her own name of "anonymous user".  Btw:  I really do believe AU is a bed wetter.  :)

And the reason I've stepped away from PH is not because of Anonymous Users.  Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong, always they just ain't too brave.  One of the reasons I don't enjoy PH as much now is because everyone falls down with their knickers in a twist trying to "get even" with them.  Try deep cleansing breaths.  Much more beneficial.
