So anyway... As I continue to learn more and more about this 'art' called photography... I have a friend that tells me something, that according to him; is paramount when it comes to photography, it's light. Apparently without it, pictures are kind of dark and well, useless. So with that said, I have decided to practice studio photography with some new lighting ideas (never underestimate the importance of reading). Now, with all of that out of the way... here is my daughter, once again, as the ever helpful model....

Interesting study in lighting . . .for me, I don't really like the ones where half of the face is gone in darkness (ie 07), but I really like the ones where one side is just more prominent (ie 06). Very pretty young lady, by the way!

Good work...0213 Maybe too many serious poses, but for the most part good lighting.

thanks Chef... what can I say... I'm a serious guy...(tee-hee).... actually, as helpful as my daughter is.... her co-operation fades fast....
Cratchet- thanks for your feedback as well.... yeah, she is kind of cute isn't she... I worry when she gets older..... it means boys.... (mean-dad-face)

Portrait work is so personal, for the photographer and model. What one likes, the other doesn't, now throw in the observer and you won't be able to please them all. With that said, I think a little more fill light would make them more pleasing for me. (PS, I'm terrible at portrait work!)

I think this is a great attempt since it is your first. I think another thing to think about are the little things like her hair in her face...I found that a bit distracting. I am not nit picking here but as long as we are in the learning curve then these things are part of the thought process along with lighting...also composition is another factor maybe put her on an angle rather then straight on in some of them..her arms so tightly crossed makes you feel she is uncomfortable and her facial expressions are expressing the same maybe make a game of it..she might lighten up. She certainly is a adorable model.#6 and #8 being my favorites.. Well, now with all that said acting as if I really know what I am talking about , I will go and practice what I preach. I have not had the courage to pull out my lights and practice as yet on my little model..but you certainly gave me the inspiration.I hope you see this as constructive from my point of view and not judgment. I salute you...Carolyn

To me the lighting being half on her face make the pics feel moody. In the one where she is smiling I think that one for sure needs full lighting. The happy smile doesn't fit the dark lighting. You are off to a great start though.

I agree with Penny about #7 and I feel that #6 is your best shot. Practice and soon your daughter will be begging for more shoots and her friends will be jealous.
