I took the grandkids swimming and these bugs were in the water. 100_3723100_3091  Can anyone tell me what they are? I need to know before I go back in the water. Also the metalic green and blue beetles were all over the milkweed. 100_3955  Never seen them before either. Maybe I'm just noticing more now that I'm looking through a lens.

  • 3091 is a cicada.  3955 is possabley a may beetle(also known as june bug), but the first has me stumped. it looks like a prehistoric creature.

My son love bugs and we have alover the house on them but the first photo is going to be a tough one to find.

All the photos are well done. Good detail. ;)

  • 3723 - Drop whatever you're doing and go back to that place, you just discovered a prehistoric creature, or maybe a lost horseshoe crab...

3091 - cicada - some say they are edible.

3955 - I'm going with Japanese Beetle, or something very close to that.

  • 3955, Poor Japanese get blamed for everything. No they are not them, but something like them unless there is a breed out there that I don't know about.

3723 is almost a horseshoe crab, but not. more likely than not a mutated alien trying to be a horseshoe crab but got tangled up with an Armadillo.

    Agree with --91,

All nice shots. Now aren't we a lot of help??

    - So shoot already!!

  • Though they look like miniature horseshoe crabs, these little desert pond critters are not crabs at all! The tadpole shrimp, or Triops, is a crustacean that finds its home in desert ponds called tinajas. They are ferocious predators and tend to chase all the other pond inhabitants. When their ponds dry up, they survive as desiccation tolerant cysts.

  • Triops (as momof3pics posted).  I have raised them a few times.  They're just plain cool.  :)  And totally harmless.
