My camera club's challenge this month is: "In The Garden" ... I'm sure that this shot is not what they had in mind ... But what do you think? ... Is this image a ribbon winner? Tombstone ... Or should I start over?
The title of this image is: "Mid-Night in The Garden of Eternal Peace."
As always your comments are always very helpful and appreciated!! ... Thank you for looking!!

not for sure if that's what they are looking for either but what a great photo.

very interesting. did you paint with light at night or are the light halos from post work?

Makes for a interesting posting for a callenge. I personley like the idea. but I would try to but a full moon effect into it to really make it work. But thats my oppinion. ;)

For me, the picture fits the title. But as you said, the judges may not have the same sense of humor.
I think I would have preferred some of the further stones to be a little darker.

That's a pretty good idea Mr. Q has. I've been coming back to this often wondering about it. I think I'll add on top of the duck's suggestion that maybe lightening the foreground grass a little too. That way it doesn't look so Spotlight-ish, but more like the light just tapers off to the back on a very, very dark night.

I like it. Yes I think it would work as a garden picture. It sure would be something different.

Stan,I really like the idea of this...I think it might work a little better with less saturation and as EMF said...darker...maybe even sepia or brown tones. You certainly get my vote for originality and thinking "out of the box"!

Well Mr Q, EF and Candice here is my revision ...
Tombstone Darker ...
(Candice, I took out all of the saturation, but it didn't change things much ... I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know how to change the color in Photoshop - My three month DIY training hasn’t taken me there yet!!) ... One of my goals with this shot was to experiment with "painting with light" ... Maybe I need to go back and try again ... Mrs B went with me and around 10:30 pm she was done for the night so this was the best of the lot ... (Mom of 3 ... I'm going to try and put a moon in ... )- Out of Focus!!

Not my favorite subject Stan but this is a wonderful shot. Especially the second one which I like best.
The painting with light is a real neat effect.
As usual - great job!

I think this would be a good shot for your club challenge Stan. The changes you made to the second shot improved it a lot. It's more subtle and natural looking. If I was judging (which I do in club competitions a couple of times a year), I think I would give it good marks.

Stan good work ...I like your thinking. I love the burn tool...I'm guessing thats what you used to achieve the darkened areas. I might suggest lowering the power of the brush so you can get an even effect on the grass area.
As far as the color thing in PS...there are some different ways to do that, the easiest way is to go to IMAGE then ADJUSTMENTS, scroll down to DESATURATE. That will give you a basic b&w. You then can add contrast or go to in that same pull down, EXPOSURE. Then if you wish to add a color filter like SEPIA, thats also in the ADJUSTMENTS pull down under PHOTO FILTER.

Ahh, yes. Much better.
About the only other suggest I would make, is to change that blue stone into B/W (or darken it a bit more) so it doesn't stand out quite as much.

While I'm not a fan of it, how do you think it would look in B/W. Most of the color is gone already.

Oooohhhh... B&W's good idea! Man, mr. q, you're on top of it with this one.
But I was originally commented again to say I definitely like what you did with the revised version. And painting with light is SOOOO much fun. We played with that alot on our camping trip in the desert. But all the pictures were taken with my teacher's D200 so I don't have any to show (it was definitely a colloborative effort. I don't think any one of use could say "Yes, I took that picture." But it was fun!)

Stan, I wouldn't ego slap you with someone else's opinion nor my own . I don't think this is good for the contest, however it is a very nicely defined image. Very clear which makes it good to work with. The reason I say this is not good is because it just looks too much like a snapshot. My comment is not a personal one and is soley based upon the image itself. The idea you have is good though. I think you are creative enough to expand on it and will then find that you will be the only one with this image but it has to have something in it that is unusual. For instance, some foggy smoke, an owl perched in a strange way upon a grave...... Hope that helps. Lori
P.S. Do a google search on Free Photoshop Brushes and perhaps look for some eagles or crows, rays of light, etc... you may be surprised what you find!!

Lori, Thank you for your honest opinion on my Tombstone image …
I have won a Blue Ribbon every month since February of this year when I started entering pictures at my camera club (in April I got 2) … However, this month could do me in!! … I had both Tombstone images printed to day and they were both terrible!! … But I have to go with what I have … I do have two more pictures to enter … But Tombstone was suppose to be my ”big winner”!! ...
So I took your advice and added some fog …Tombstone with Fog ... The actual image that will get printed has a little more saturation ... This fog thing is a f
irst time for me … But I may have gone a little overboard … I will do another one with not so much fog and then have them both printed to see what happens …
I have never worked with brushes that create things … so I’m not sure how that works … I’m still looking for a crow or raven to perch on one of the Tombstones … Now I’m going to have to find a new name! … the current one isn’t going to fit! ...
Thank you again Lori for your advise and helpful tips!!
