... and the surprises you get when you shoot in an editorial setting with a DianaF+.  This week for my editorial class i decided to take my DianaF+, the hotshoe flash adapter and a lot of gambling on whether or not I could get the transmitter for the strobe to work with the diana.  It did and my model and I had tons of fun shooting with it and my 35mm camera.

Today I'll show you the diana fun and maybe later the shots I got with my 35mm.  Now I'm going to enlighten you guys a bit about the diana.  These are not the sharpest crayons in the box, thanks to the wonderfulness of a plastic lens.  And they are not the most contrasty negatives you'll ever see.  So the results I have are the best that can be done without completely blowing out the highlights.  Also, the vignetting at the edges are natural on the film itself.  That being said, I hope you enjoy my Diana Fun!

Shot with Ilford 120 HP5 ISO 400 film.  I had to have ISO 400 due to the fact that diana's only have three f-stops (f22-f11) and two shutterspeeds (1/60 and bulb).  These were all shot at f11 at 1/60" with one umbrella strobe for lighting.  Negatives scanned in at school, levels and contrast in CS2.

  • I need to get into shooting B&W again. I still have Kodak's tmax 100 film, about 6 rolls outdated but that should not matter.

I have never heard of a diana and looks to be a challenge. These are good shots but I wonder how window light would work at a 60th at f11. I believe the film lattitude for your hp5 is 9 stops So Ansel would place the lighting probably at a distance to give a proper reading in zone 4 perhaps. I do like the poses of your pretty model.  Ah... a regular light bulb in a reflector would be fun also since you are using B&W. You do good work and this is a good teaching method we can all use if you can operate your camera in manual.

  • EF, me lass, you've gone far, far beyond me own meager skills...me compass be broken and me bearings be lost!  I'm still at f8 and be there!

You do appear to be having fun, and please do post your 35mm shots too.

  • EF,

I really enjoyed this shoot. The image quality and the pure reactions of your model were priceless. So what if the viewfinder and lens don't match. At least you learned that, even by error, that subjects are best if know centered. You did good. Keep up the good works. Oh that your class could last longer.

  • Oh no, I agree Aaron!  I was quite pleased with that mistake!  It was the first shot I took with the diana and I remembered the off kilterness after I took it and tried to be a little more conscious of the fact, but I definitely say it was a happy mistake.

For dune:  The Diana and her new shape, the Diana+
Also, we just moved from a regular light and reflector in the class.  My past two posts were shot with that lighting condition.  I believe we'll be moving to color slide film with the umbrellas this week.  But I won't know until Tuesday what my next assignment really is.
