A walk in the park.....

By momof3pics written 7/27/08 5:47 PM, published 7/27/08 5:47 PM

A walk in the park with my Daughter turned out to be a good day.  She just got over a bad cold and I needed to get out of the house. We had fun and saw lots of different nature scenes.

such as... duck_reflectionmama_and_babiessleep_float  and  caspian_tern ( this I could not get a good shot of, but I never had seen this bird before)

We took some photos of trees for the challenge.  reflection_of_3tree_in_waterwater_reflection

And my Daughter got into the tree thing. ;)  love_pat  and  kissing_the_tree

Hope you enjoy and thanks for looking. :)

Today.....

....started out like any other day.  On the way back from exercise class, I stopped at the pond and got this Popup Linkreflection shot, and a shot of one of the ducks Popup Linkforaging for bugs.  I was a happy camper.

Later on, I went to St. Louis to the camera store.....and picked up my new lenses!  I've not had much chance to play since it's so nasty outside, but I managed to get a few shots of my favorite subjects: nature.

These were shot with the 100mm f/2.8 Macro  Popup Link1 Popup Link2 Popup Link3 Popup Link4

I shot these with the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS  (all shots were from 30 feet or more away) Popup Link1 Popup Link2 Popup Link3

Woo-Hoo!  While the cat's away, the mouse will play!!  My hubby's gone on a business trip....if y'all don't hear from me after Wed., you'll know he's not as happy as I am about the new lenses and my body parts can be found floating in the Miss. River!  j/k (I HOPE!)

Hope y'all enjoy!

Sunday Drive

By Lidljo written 3/20/06 3:47 PM, published 3/20/06 3:47 PM
Sunday we went for a drive to an area south of us - Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan.  This is known as an artist community - there are several galleries and lots of little consignment shops.  Pederson Mill is a tourist stop.  We had never stopped so even though the mill was closed I had Wim stop so I could take some pictures.
Popup LinkPederson Mill I don't like the coloring in this one, but I wanted you to see the larger setting.

Reflections: A day in the life...

By loweho written 3/13/06 11:10 AM, published 3/13/06 11:10 AM
It quit raining for a second yesterday so I says to Barb "Let's duck into Deming park and maybe take some pics of the ducks!" (I'm even funny in real life) I thought I might get some reflections also since it had been raining for about 3 days and there is a pond also... what could go wrong?
The ducks normally pester the heck out of you for food... not today... today they wanted to be on the other side of the pond... and I don't mean that particular side, just the side I wasn't on. Having left my telephoto in the car I had to send my assistant after it, and by "assistant", I mean wife, and by "sent" I mean begged and faked a bad back with a slight limp until she gave in. But the low grumbling and cursing as she went sent the ducks ever farther away. Still I managed to get these duck shots:Popup LinkDuck 1 Popup LinkDuck 2 Popup LinkDuck 3
I took a pic of my lovely wife (belated suck up) Popup LinkBarb on the covered bridge, and thinking the shot would look better if she'd stand in the next opening of the bridge, I motioned for her to move over. She, in turn, flipped me a one-digit hand signal back. I was sure it was some sort of photog assistant hand signal that I'm not privy to... and not wanting to show my ignorance... I let it slide... the grumbling continued. Better move on.
There was also an interesting Popup Linkpattern on the far bank so I took a pic of it cropped in close and rotated it 90 degrees to abstract it even more and it's interesting but I don't know why I like it.
This poor Popup LinkHorseshoe pit pic is an example of me breaking my cardinal rule of photography (maybe my only rule): Don't let the subject distract you! What I mean is, when we look at something our brain filters out everything extraneous to what it's interested in. We need to be conscious of this, and not lock-in on the subject but also let our eye wander around the edges. Look at what's behind the subject, pointing at the subject, distracting from the subject. You get the idea. I didn't really do that with this shot, if I had, I would have removed the bright leaf on the edge, and also the distracting little stick and messed up area of sand in the upper right and some other things. But I was distracted by standing in the water and finding I had a hole in my shoe. When I asked my assistant if she was going to buy me a new pair soon she... well, just replay the covered bridge paragraph and add sound.
Having done all the damage I could do at the park we headed home... plus it started pouring again. When we got there it had cleared up and as I was getting out I seen a reflection of our old basketball Popup LinkGoal in the car window. I propped the door open, got a bucket to stand on cause I wanted to also get a reflection of the clouds off a puddle behind the door. But as I was composing it, I didn't like it focused on the basketball goal, or on the water, neither seemed to do it for me so I focused between them and liked the muted colors and soft focus a lot better than I thought I would.

I hope this doesn't exceed max character count or your attention span.

DUCKS

By colbb written 10/7/05 9:55 AM, published 10/7/05 9:55 AM

While on the Navy Golf Course in Los Alamitos, CA yesterday, I spotted a duck couple in a siesta mode.  Ducks and birds are so accustomed to people now that one can usually get close to them.  In fact, you must not leave food in the golf cart or the birds will take it, even if in a wrapper or box.

Too bad the colorful male was in the shade, but I did like the contrast of reeds, grass, water & reflections.

Reelfoot 2

I didn't tell y'all anything about this place in my last post; I will rectify that now.  The lake, which is 18,000 acres, was formed back in early 1812 when a volcano erupted at New Madrid, MO.  They didn't measure quakes back then, but it's been said this was the strongest "feeling" one to date.  The lake isn't very deep; trees still grow everywhere and the "stumps" that are there have been formed by the lake.  That is the context of this post.  Mostly wood gallery.  Hope y'all enjoy!

Reelfoot Lake

I'm in Dyersburg, TN this week, and this is really close to a place we go fishing about 2 or 3 times a year.  I took a drive out there this morning and thought I'd share the place with you.  I took lots of pics, so I'll split it up in two posts.  The first one will consist of places and things that are typical of the area.  On the drive out, I had to pull over and gaze at Popup Linkthis.  Here's the Reelfoot Lake gallery.  (I apologize to dial up users...)
On the way back, I was just taking my time, still enjoying the scenery.  There was a farm tractor in front of me, and y'all know how slow they go; that didn't bother me today.  I wasn't in a hurry.  A little piece out the road, I run into this!  A good ol' boy and his new bride....honeymooning in the middle of the road!
Leaving Tiptonville, I glanced over and saw  Popup Linkthis.  I can't leave y'all without giving you at least ONE of my  Popup Linksignature pics.
Hope y'all enjoy!

The Puyallup Fair - Puyallup, WA

Last Friday, Shannon and I went to the annual Puyallup Fair (sorry if I mis-spell - no spell checker catches this). We saw Popup Linkducks, Popup Linkand some Popup Linkcows. Course, seeing the cows reminded me of why I'm vegetarian, but seeing Popup Linkthis reminds me of how fun it is to barbecue.

Oh yea - we saw lots of Roller Coasters
