Haskell Canyon Fire 2006

By jimmahan written 6/9/08 12:02 PM, published 6/9/08 12:03 PM

Haskell Canyon Fire 2006 This images recently won 3rd placed for Photo Journalism in the Santa Clarita Valley Photographers Association spring print competition. The photo was taken from my back yard when I lived in Santa Clarita. The fire was about 100 yards from my house -- which is too close for me!

PS: Thanks you for all the comments. To answer some of your questions, no one was seriously injured and no structures were lost. There were about a dozen fire trucks and crews to fight this fire alone with a water dropping helicopter. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes.

Two of My Favorite Things To Photograph

The weather is getting nice but the fire danger is really bad right now.  The fire department has been really busy.  Yesterday some friends house caught fire.  They stopped it and it rekindled last night and they lost it.  We went to see if they needed anything from us.  While we were there my husband got called to a Grass fire. We went when things were all done and they were clearing out.  Because of the cut backs on the DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) they had to call on other  departments.  This fire burned about four acres.  It was quite windy so it really pushed the fire.  (This is the part of the story that you that know me will get the title of this post) Now here are the  guilty parties.  One of them picked up a bunch of dried grass to see if it would burn.   Well he burned his hand a little and dropped it. Well he found out the hard way that yes it would burn.  When they left they walked down to the farm down the road for lunch and to wait for the elders.  I can't imagine that they will be very happy with them.  It almost burned down the neighbors house too.  Now my husband is out on another brush fire.

Campfire Light

By Arddwyn written 6/27/06 8:43 AM, published 6/27/06 8:43 AM
I love camping and I love stargazing. Sometimes I've combined stargazing with photography but I had never tried to take pictures around the campfire before. This Saturday I went with some friends and I could not resist to bring the camera out and try my hand at some night pictures. I was fascinated with how the fire made everything look so  Popup Linkpeaceful, and even the trees around us seemed to  Popup Linkglow with the firelight. The best thing though, was looking into the Popup Linkflames, it even seemed to be looking back at you. Finally it was time to put out the fire and go into the tents, by then the only light left was just the  Popup Linkstarlight filtering through the trees.

Disturbing Action Shots (Late Entry) and After Dark Shots

By Pyro43 written 6/22/06 7:00 PM, published 6/22/06 7:00 PM
The firefighters, the EMTs, the law enforcement officers, all of those who protect the citizens of our communities, never know when, or if, they might be called upon to assist a friend or relative. It's in the back of their minds every time they are beckoned, but usually it doesn't happen. It may be a car accident, a fire, a rescue call or who knows what, but it can and does happen, especially in a small community. It always leaves you with an empty, sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. It leaves you with sadness. It leaves you wondering, "What if that had been my son or daughter?"

Our fire department has rehearsals (practices) on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The plan for our rehearsal last Thursday was to tour two buildings in order to familiarize the firefighters with the construction and layout that was used in each. The first building we toured was a wood frame Popup Linkcondominium that is currently under construction along the Milwaukee River. The other building is a Popup Linkstone mill, also on the Milwaukee River, that was constructed over 100 years ago, and at this time, houses several businesses.

Roll call was at 7:00 pm, and after a few announcements we headed to the condo. The walk through/walk around at the condo lasted until about 7:45. We then walked about a block to the mill and started the tour there. Sometime between 8:15 and 8:30, our pagers sounded and we were alerted of a fire situation at a specific intersection. The intersection didn't register with me until we arrived on scene. The Popup Linkfire was in a building that is owned by, and houses the business of, a good friend of mine. During Popup Linkthe attack, I discovered that one of my friend's sons had been burned. I called my friend via cell phone and he told me that he and his wife were in route to the hospital. Shortly thereafter, the fire was extinguished and it was time to return to the station.

Before we could leave the scene of the fire, however, our pagers sounded once again. This time there was a wire arcing and sparking on a pole out in the township. We arrived on scene and sure enough, just as reported, there was Popup Linkarcing and sparking on a pole. There was nothing we could do except wait andPopup Linkwatch until the power company arrived to fix the problem. After about two hours, we finally returned to the station.

I left the station at about midnight, and as I drove past my friend's business, I saw him standing on the corner with a woman that was filling out a report. He was also talking on his cell phone to his wife, who had remained at the hospital when he left. He handed the phone to me, and I talked with his wife while he finished his business with the report. His wife told me that their son has second degree burns on his arms and legs with the possibility of some third degree burns. Luckily, his face was not burned nor did he inhale any flames. He is going to have a long stay in the hospital and not be able to work for some months. Needless to say, he is in our thoughts and prayers.

You never know.....do you?

the smoke gets closer

By Jump1ok written 4/12/06 8:49 PM, published 4/12/06 8:49 PM

I have been watching the smoke from my front porch since Sunday. Last night it topped the hill. It is backburning against the wind so it is Popup Linkprogressing slowly. Sometimes it really Popup Linksmokes. Sometimes it just  Popup Linksmolders. Then when you think it is out it  Popup Linkflares up again.

Hey everybody! What a great community you guys have. Hope I can be an active part of it. For my first post I thought I would toss in a little variety. Popup LinkThis is from a recent Popup Linkfire in my community. Next we have a picture of my Popup Linkgranddaughter cautiously looking to see where grandpa is hiding out. Since the focus this week is on architecture, here is an open air Popup Linkbuilding I came across while strolling a beach. Finally, a simple Popup Linkgood night.

I love the way a fire looks and smells. I think it is awsome how you can see the shapes of the flames, and the many diffrent colors of the flames. But at the same time see right through them. Popup LinkHOT STUFF

Reflections

By KayN written 1/1/06 11:39 AM, published 1/1/06 11:39 AM
A lot of people choose this time of year to "reflect" back on what the previous year has been like.  I do my reflecting on a weekly basis, or at least it feels like I do.  The paths I have taken, the cards that have been dealt to me and what I have chosen to do with them, regrets, accomplishments, memories of loved ones who've gone on before me.....I think about more than this, but I know y'all ain't interested in all that.  I suppose these are things we all mull over.  With "reflecting" being at the forefront of a lot of people's minds now, I chose to do a few pics on reflection.

Fireplace warmth

By Lidljo written 12/30/05 5:38 PM, published 12/30/05 5:38 PM
I went to my sister's house today, and my niece and I were playing with our cameras.  It was cold and gray outside so we found some warmth inside by the Popup Linkfireplace, and an eleven year old gave me the ideas to do these shots of the Popup Linkfire.  I played around with them later in Photoshop and came up with  Popup Linkfire 4.

Back to work

At 04:30 Nov 18 the bells went off at the fire house were I work. We had already been to the "Village" once that night for a rescue which is our typical call, this however was something different. A brush fire half way across the County, behind my house!
I worked the fire from that time until the evening of Nov 21.
The fire started in the Popup Link oil fields , it looks like the Popup Link tanks are burning but it is the hillside.
From there we moved into the Popup Link residential area to Popup Link protect structures.
We spent most of the day going house to house just ahead of the Popup Link fire It Popup Link burned quite Popup Link fast and Popup Link close to Popup Link homes
