Grand Canyon: Some More More

By wilk written 7/29/06 12:50 PM, published 7/29/06 12:50 PM
What I decided was that capturing the "whole" canyon in some single, definitive photo was impossible and that I'd be better off if I focused my shots and tried to capture some detail and texture.

In Sept. 2004, I went rafting through the Grand Canyon.  After departing Lee's Ferry you travel under Popup LinkNavajo Bridge. Watch out for Popup LinkEddy's a large one can trap a boat.  Getting Popup LinkDeeper in the Canyon.  Along the way we visited numerous waterfalls  Popup LinkSmall waterfall 1  Popup LinkSmall waterfall 2 . Ya Gotta Start Somewhere!

By Buccaneer Bruce written 4/9/06 7:49 PM, published 4/9/06 7:49 PM
I've been racking my brains trying to decide what to do for my first post since I joined this great site several weeks ago.  Finally, I decided to start by sharing photos from my favorite place I've ever visited...the Grand Canyon.

I worked at the Canyon in 1986, and have revisited it on 4 occasions since then.  It was a great place to work, but with views like these, it made the job easier.Popup LinkOverlook 1 Popup LinkOverlook 2 Popup LinkOverlook 3
I've hiked to the bottom of the Canyon more than 10 times.  Some of the trails are easier Popup LinkTrail than others. Popup LinkHermit

The second trail is called Hermits Trail, and after you hike several miles, you come to Dripping Springs. Popup LinkDripping As you can see, it's appropriately named.  It was much easier to see formations like Duck on a Rock!Popup LinkDuck

The Grand Canyon is famous for it's sunsets, Popup LinkPurple Haze and the weather can be unpredictable, Popup LinkStorm but when you get that once in a lifetime shot it makes you appreciate the experience even more. Popup LinkLightning

I can't wait to go back next year!

A few flight shots.

By ClassyShots written 3/18/06 9:30 AM, published 3/18/06 9:30 AM
A few years ago we flew to Chattanooga for a friends wedding. These are a few shots from the flight.

Portland, Oregon is a city divided by a river. There are Popup Linkeight bridges that tie it all together. This was taken shortly after take off from PDX. We stopped in L.A. to toss a few bodies off and pick up some fresh ones. Popup LinkThis sunset is looking back West from somewhere over AZ.  Coming back West I had picked my seat on the side of the plane and had it all set up so I would be able to see the Grand Canyon. I really lucked out and the clouds broke just as we got over  Popup LinkThe Canyon. Popup LinkOne more shot of The Canyon.

If you are going to shoot while flying... Clean the window, keep your camera as close to the window as you can to cut unwanted reflections and use a U.V. or haze filter if you have one. Best shooting time as per normal for landscapes is early morning and late evening because of haze problems.

Did you know that with an average weight of 4.5 grams it would take 7,500,000 of Popup LinkThese to equal the weight of a 737 with an average load on it?

Reflecting thoughts

The weather has been so dreary here and there just hasn't been anything interesting to shoot, so I started looking back at some of my past pictures.  Summer before last we were traveling the southern route to California.  In the middle of the prairie while crossing Texas we came across this Popup Linkhuge cross that had statues around it and gardens.  It was lovely.  We saw the Popup LinkPainted Desert and Popup Linkthe Grand Canyon.  In the desert we found some  Popup Linkpetrified wood and a Popup Linksunset in New Mexico.  We spent a week in Mammoth Lakes in California and enjoyed every minute.  On our way home we stopped at The House on the Rock in Wisconsin.  One of my favorite rooms there has this huge carousel with
Popup Linktwirling lights.

Grand Canyon During the Golden Hour

By cavaroc written 11/12/05 5:15 PM, published 11/12/05 5:15 PM
These were taken back in September when I made a road trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon with some friends.  I just recently put this panorama together because at first glance of the 10 or so photos I didn't think it would make an interesting enough photo for the effort.  Popup LinkThis photo is one that stood out on its own as I was putting together Popup Linkthe actual panorama.  They were taken at the Desert View lookout about as far east of the Grand Canyon as you can get.

Road Trip

One of the "problems" I found on our road trip earlier this year was light.  Since we were, in fact, trying to get somewhere it was rare that I had good light for any of my pictures.  The only two places I was able to get good light was Death Valley & Redwood National Park, both of which we spend the night at.

Getting the lighting right at the ocean was hard.  I had to position Shannon in such a fasion that the light was comming at her perpendicular to the ocean AND get the ocean in the background!  There was only a few bluffs where I could do that.
