Horse Eyes - Composition Help?

By Tarsier written 5/14/08 7:31 AM, published 5/14/08 7:31 AM

One of my favorite things to try to capture is a horse's eye, but I can never seem to get the composition quite right.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Stan is getting a kick out of the positive comments we have received from many of you concerning his Cowboy poetry and my photos. We really do appreciate the kind words and that many of you have asked to see more.

Eventually our little endeavor will be put into a western coffee table book, Cowboy calendars and more.

Thank you for looking...

The Cowboy pictured in the photo (Stan Kruml) is a friend of mine. He loves to write Cowboy poetry, I love to take photos and we have fun putting the two together.
If you like this one, I will be happy to share more. Thanks for looking.

You are such a __ __!

BSV asked if there were any pics of  the sleigh bells.  I can not believe that I didn't get a close up of them!  But if you look closely at the horse on the right you can kind of see them. They are right behind I think it is called a yolk. They are 3 of them that you can see. They are dark they don't shine anymore but they still sound absolutely beautiful! *

Train Travel

By cokids written 1/30/08 7:12 AM, published 1/30/08 7:12 AM

Yes, these are more from the train trip last spring. Here is a shot inside the sleeper car...the only way to go! It's tight, but surely beats doing your own driving and yes, you CAN shoot through windows...IF they are clean enough which they are sometimes. Train Interior Amish/Mennonite Mom And here's the proof of the pudding! This was shot through the window at a stop. So, at least I didn't have to deal with train movement though that can add interest in itself. See last image. Cloud formations on the way. There are glorious cloud formations to be seen along the way. I was a bit worried about these. They billowed up as we passed through Illinois on the way back. Dusk horse coral And here is my favorite! This is a coral of horses as we passed near Browning, Montana on our way to Glacier. It was dusk and the light was absolutely gorgeous! The train was moving, so I got this 'shake' effect. I personally like it! How about you?

Sorry these aren't bigger, but it's  my way of protecting them from use. I know I could put a copyright notice across the front, but that seems even more destructive of seeing the image.

One of "those" Days

By digitalphotodude written 1/13/08 9:46 AM, published 1/14/08 1:43 PM

Yesterday started out with quite a foggy morning. So as I was heading out, took the camera along. I stopped by the horse farm to take some pictures and thought I had something good. When I got back and downloaded the pictures, much to my dismay there was dirt on the sensor. I looked through all the pictures and was sick. So ... I began deleting.  I stopped about halfway through and thought about trying to save some of these shots.

Here are a couple of the originals and the results:

Foggy driveway Original     Edited using cloning & contrast
Original Fencerow              Foggy Fencerow Edited

Enjoy! Let me know what you think. Any other suggestions?

Equestrian Equilibrium ... Challenge: Focus & Composition

By digitalphotodude written 1/1/08 8:53 AM, published 1/1/08 8:53 AM

Staying on a horse is not a problem when conditions are ideal. Rarely are conditions ideal. On a horse trail not far from Wellsboro, PA we discovered that horses like to kick, roll in the creek, run off when you step one foot into the stirrup, go bronco like they are in the rodeo. And sometimes, you get an amazingly sweet spirited horse that just wants nothing more than contact between horse and rider. I found several not far from my home that became curious and actually too close to photograph at one point that had that kind of spirit.

Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah

By loweho written 10/24/07 12:15 PM, published 10/25/07 4:45 AM
I hope these look ok I did them at the library on my laptop.
They are all from Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah, about 30 miles from Arches National Park.  Legend has it the park got it's name from the fact that they would herd horses out on the point and close off a narrow neck of land to corral them.  Once they were left there and died hence the name, or at least that's the story.  The neck is pretty narrow about 30 yards with about a 2000 foot drop on either side but it wasn't as bad going across it as it was thinking about going across it.  There's enough plants and obstructions that it's not real obvious.  Barb was freaking out anyway.  When we left I told her to pull over and let me out and I'd take a picture of her driving across then I'd catch up with her.  She said she didn't want to do it because, "If I'm not with you you'll get too close to the edge!"  I said, "If you weren't with me I wouldn't NEED to get too close to the edge!"  She dropped me off.  The picture sucked though cause you couldn't tell it was narrow there.

I could enter this in the challenge cause I'm sure Barb thinks a 4500 mile roadtrip with a smartass is purgatory, if not hell itself.
Oh, these are a squarish 8x10 format cause I was making them for Amber.  She wants to decorate her apartment with pics we shot on vacation and she wanted 8x10s.

Afternoon In The Field

By Paulamouse written 10/4/07 6:36 PM, published 10/4/07 6:36 PM

The weather being so unusualy warm today, I drove over to the "Butterfly Field" to see what the action was, and it was worth the trip.

Buckeye
Meadow Fratillary
Mormon Metalmark
Yellow Sulfur

I even found this Brown Spotted Clearwing sitting on some Horse Nettle seed pods.

After I left the field I did some walking in the woods, picked a few Fox Grapes, and, as I came out of the woods I looked down over the butterfly field and discovered I was being watched.

Then I drove around the back side of the lake and waited for the Sunset.

Drivin' around ...

By smarden written 9/29/07 10:30 AM, published 9/29/07 10:30 AM

... the countryside a few months ago. Spotted this handsome animal and had to snap off a few shots.

It's the only thing I've shot so far that I thought needed the B&W treatment, mainly 'cos the horse was white, colour seemed to detract from his image.

I'm told he's an Arabian. He was gorgeous. Pranced around the field watching me at the gate, and more or less posing for his shots! :)
