The flowers. Now come on, you knew it was going to come to this, didn't you?
While walking along a trail, I spotted this orange flower. It wasn't until I started snapping, that I realized it was an orange duo. This bee was very energetic on this purple flower, and this one just caught my eye. These, 1 and 2, caught my eye at a campground; but hey, I walked to them!
The color. One of the reason MsQ and I went this far north, was to get some color shots. Well, we were about two week early, but we were able to get some. There were red berries on the ground and in the trees (never did get the name of the tree.) Some of the sorter trees were starting to turn colors, also. Along the path, we came across this wood snake.
The falls.
The north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota is formed from volcanic rock; the last few feet (relative speaking) can create some amazing scenes, mainly in the form of waterfalls. At one point I saw a sign stating we were only 750 feet above the lake, yet we were less then a mile from the lake. This mean you can go from a calm stream to a raging torrent in the matter of a few feet.
This set of falls was amazing, in that the falls on the left never filled up the hole it was falling in. Several falls were sorta isolated creating an almost magical effect. Double, and more, fall were common. Do you think they were using logs to keep the wall from closing in?
This last one was from the eastern most falls on the trip, the land on the right is Canada, and on the left is in the USA.
Sorry that I can’t properly identify all these falls, but after awhile, even if they are different, they all start to look the same.
The trails. To reach the waterfalls, you have one option - walk. On one hike I counted these stairs going down, twelve steps per flight, fifteen flights; do the math - toofriggin'many! MsQ took this shot of me coming up, I wend up and down these twice, oh my aching knees. Here is a sample of one of the trails we were on. I'll finish with this picture of one of the streams. The root-beer coloring comes from a combination of humic acid and iron ore.
The lake.
MsQ and I took a mini vacation to the north shore of Minnesota – the shore of Lake Superior. While there, we had beautiful weather. The lake was cooperating in showing off its charms. We experienced the lake from calm, to a little rough.
We didn’t get to see any really, really rough water (the waves can reach a max of thirty feet – no thank you for us!)This spit of land turned out to be my favorite photographic object. The wave coming up against it created quite a show, and it worked out well for a quick spot to shoot this sundown.
From shore you could watch the ships go up and down from port.
Just watching the skyline you could almost see forever (double panorama.) This was the nearby harbor town. Waves splashing on what they call a beach.
