Famous UK Bridges

Pulteney Bridge is a bridge that crosses the River Avon, located in Bath, England and completed in 1773. It was designed by Robert Adam and is one of only four bridges in the world with shops across the full span on both sides. It is named after Frances Pulteney, heiress in 1767 of the Bathwick estate across the river from Bath. Bathwick was a simple village in a rural setting, but Frances's husband William could see its potential. He made plans to create a new town, which would become a suburb to the historic city of Bath. First he needed a better river crossing than the existing ferry. Hence the bridge. Poultney_Bridge_1

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London. In the second half of the 19th century, increased commercial development in the East End of London led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. A traditional fixed bridge could not be built because it would cut off access to the port facilities in the Pool of London, between London Bridge and the Tower of London. The two side-spans are suspension bridges, each 270 feet (82 m) long, with the suspension rods anchored both at the abutments and through rods contained within the bridge's upper walkways. The pedestrian walkways are 143 feet (44 m) above the river at high tide. The bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, and his wife, Alexandra of Denmark. Tower_Bridge_1

The London Millennium Footbridge is a pedestrian-only steel suspension bridge crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City. It is located between Southwark Bridge (downstream) and Blackfriars Bridge (upstream). With construction beginning in 1998, it was the first new bridge across the Thames in London since Tower Bridge in 1894. Londoners nicknamed the bridge the Wobbly Bridge after crowds of pedestrians felt an unexpected swaying motion on the first two days after the bridge opened. The bridge was closed and modified, and further modifications eliminated the "wobble" entirely. The southern end of the bridge is near Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery and Tate Modern, the north end next to the City of London School below St Paul's Cathedral. The bridge alignment is such that a clear view of St Paul's south facade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge supports, thus providing a scenic view of the cathedral. I don't have much free time, so even though I don't comment much, I look at most of them and they're all great. Here are a couple of pics I took this week: Popup LinkThe Hampshire County Council Castle in Winchester, the capital of Old England, and Popup LinkThe Thames at night in the capital of modern England.

More of the London Eye

By kunalb written 3/22/05 1:44 PM, published 3/22/05 1:44 PM

As requested... here are a few more of the London Eye, and one of the Gherkin. The Eye's cool but BA uses airline terminology when talking about it. "Please check in 30 mins early", "your flight will last xx minutes", etc. If it's a flight then where's my meal?

Long time lurker, first time poster: London

By kunalb written 3/20/05 6:47 AM, published 3/20/05 6:47 AM

This was the site that got me interested in photography. So armed with my credit card a few months ago, I went and bought a cam. These are some of my first pics.

I go to London every month or so to meet friends. One of the first things you see coming out of Waterloo station is the Popup LinkLondon Eye, opposite Popup LinkCounty Hall. Walking along the Thames, we saw Popup LinkSt Paul's cathedral and a Popup Linklonely seagull on the steps to the Thames. Also, what is seemingly a bridge that they started building but didn't bother finishing - Popup Linkwhat's the point of these?

After a short visit to Popup LinkTate Modern, we headed towards Popup Linkthe City to show a friend Popup Linkthe Gherkin. We continued just walked around and had a few drinks, I guess... I don't remember. For a while Popup LinkI thought I was seeing double and that Popup Linkpeople were watching me, even from the bus.

At night, we went to the Popup LinkThe West End but didn't have any tickets to anything. We Popup Linkwalked along the Thames again back to the station.

Standing Guard

On a recent trip to London, I had the chance to attend the Changing of the Guard and, through the fence around Buckingham Palace, I was able to get this shot of a Popup LinkPalace Guard. I think the fence makes a nice frame. Comments?
